Summary
Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age‑specific components. Responsible for coordinating care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency – applicants must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by a recognized accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE) at the time the program was completed.

Masters‑level bridge program candidates who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level nursing degree may become registered as a nurse prior to completing the bridge program.

Upon obtaining a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6)

Foreign nursing graduates must possess current, full, active, and unrestricted registration from a state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia, and may receive credit for foreign education higher than an associate degree/entry level through formal equivalency validation accepted by VA.

Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates who meet basic education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed at the entry level for a 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure.

Grade determination logic includes scope‑education and dimension criteria (Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, Evidence‑Based Practice/Research) as detailed in the online assessment.

Level I—fundamental knowledge‑based care with an associate degree or diploma; Level II—integration of biopsychosocial concepts with 1–2 years of professional experience; Level III—proficiency in practice with 2–3 years of experience; advanced levels include RN II to RN III with corresponding BSN/MSN/Doctoral qualifications.

Preferred Experience: Three to five years of increasingly complex nursing practice; computer literate; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Basic Life Support (BLS).

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting 10 pounds or more, and pushing. May involve exposure to infectious patients and need to don protective clothing in isolation or operative scenarios. Ability to handle potentially combative patients with delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

All clinically active staff must hold an active BLS certification; ACLS certification may be required for certain roles.

Duties

Assist each patient from check‑in to check‑out and other assigned responsibilities.

Administer moderate sedation/analgesia under direct supervision of a physician authorized for moderate sedation.

Demonstrate dedication to the nursing profession and represent nursing in community and professional activities.

Provide education to patients, families, and significant others.

Administer medications and treatment.

Participate in the quality improvement process and address the needs of adult and geriatric patients.

Display positive, effective communication skills, professional behaviours, and leadership that promote excellence, improve nursing practice, and foster collaboration beyond the immediate practice setting.

Make sustained contributions by actively participating in facility or service‑level committees or councils, establishing relationships, and demonstrating leadership to enhance care beyond the immediate setting.

Initiate and lead interdisciplinary teams that use critical thinking to improve nursing practice beyond the immediate setting.
