This Medical Assistant role supports a busy women’s health and OB‑GYN practice by providing compassionate, patient-centered care and high-quality clinical support to providers. You will room patients, perform vital signs and initial assessments, assist with exams and in-office procedures, manage heavy phone triage, and coordinate key aspects of patient care such as scheduling surgeries and updating the electronic medical record. This position is ideal for an experienced Medical Assistant who thrives in a close-knit, collaborative environment and is passionate about women’s health.
Responsibilities
Room patients and escort them to exam rooms in a timely and professional manner.
Perform initial patient assessments, including obtaining and documenting vital signs and other relevant clinical information.
Update and maintain accurate and thorough information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR/EHR).
Assist providers during patient exams and in-office procedures, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
Support clinicians by entering orders accurately and ensuring appropriate follow-up and completion of ordered tests, procedures, and referrals.
Update and maintain providers’ daily office schedules to support efficient patient flow.
Respond to patient telephone calls, conduct heavy phone triage, and document all conversations and clinical advice in the patient’s chart.
Schedule patient surgeries and coordinate related appointments and instructions.
Provide excellent customer service and patient care, addressing questions and concerns with empathy and professionalism.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment in exam rooms and clinical areas.
Demonstrate reliability and good attendance to support consistent, high-quality patient care.
Float between clinic locations in Northwest and Southwest Portland as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned to support clinic operations and patient care.
Essential Skills
4–5+ years of medical assisting experience.
Experience in OB‑GYN and/or women’s health strongly preferred; open to candidates with family care, pediatrics, or other experience that includes heavy triage.
Graduation from an accredited medical assisting program, or a bachelor’s or associate degree with sufficient relevant experience.
National Medical Assistant certification highly preferred (such as NCCT, AAMA, RMA, AMT, CMA, or NHA).
Current CPR certification.
Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems and electronic health records documentation.
Demonstrated experience taking vital signs and performing routine clinical tasks in an outpatient setting.
Strong phone triage skills and ability to manage a high volume of patient calls.
Excellent customer service skills and a strong commitment to patient-centered care.
Proven reliability, strong work ethic, and consistent attendance.
Ability to float between Northwest Portland and Southwest Portland clinic locations as needed.
Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, midwives, nurses, sonographers, and other medical assistants in a team-based environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience specifically in OB‑GYN, women’s health, or labor and delivery settings.
Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish, are a plus.
Familiarity with women’s health procedures and terminology, including OB/GYN and labor and delivery.
Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent national MA certification (NCCT, AAMA, RMA, AMT, CMA, NHA) is highly preferred.
Experience working with electronic medical records and electronic health records (EMR/EHR).
Basic Life Support (BLS) training and skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and support patient education.
Ability to adapt to a fast-paced clinical environment and manage multiple priorities.
Interest in ongoing learning, continuing education, and staying current with evidence-based practices in women’s health.
Work Environment
This position is based in a mid‑sized, established women’s health and OB‑GYN clinic on Portland’s west side, with free onsite parking. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, starting as five 8‑hour shifts during training; once fully up to speed, the schedule typically transitions to four 10‑hour shifts. There are no night or weekend shifts. You will work in a close‑knit, collaborative practice where culture, teamwork, and a family‑oriented environment are highly valued. The clinic provides comprehensive, evidence‑based OB‑GYN care, including advanced hysteroscopy, laparoscopic and robotic gynecologic surgery, and office‑based gynecology procedures. The team includes physicians, midwives, nurses, sonographers, and medical assistants who focus on patient‑centered, informed care and patient education. The environment emphasizes continuous improvement, on‑the‑job training, and opportunities for advancement.
