Position Overview
This role manages an equipment repair shop, directing the maintenance and repair of equipment used for highway maintenance, construction, and emergency operations. The manager prioritizes shop workload based on customer requirements, parts availability, and manpower, and may outsource work as needed. The position interfaces with MANCON to ensure the Integrated Supply Storeroom is stocked for fleet maintenance and repair.
Responsibilities
Manage the State Inspection process in accordance with Virginia State Police policies and regulations.
Prepare work orders, records, and reports for equipment received, assigned, transferred, or salvaged.
Monitor and update work orders to ensure proper posting and completion.
Maintain records on equipment and personnel, and create requisitions for repairs and maintenance.
Use towing and other related contracts as needed to accomplish work.
Prepare equipment for emergency operations and repair equipment in the shop or in the field during emergencies.
Maintain inventory of major tools and related documentation, and use private vendors when necessary to avoid shop backlog.
Ensure procurement logs, invoices, and contracts are posted and submitted to the Equipment Office.
Track equipment assigned to the shop's preventive maintenance program and schedule PMs, coordinating with work area supervision.
Review and communicate safety procedures, maintain Safety Data Sheet files, and ensure compliance with hazardous material regulations and VDOT’s Spill Preventive Control and Countermeasures Plan.
Schedule and direct work activities of shop personnel to meet customer expectations, industry standards, and minimize downtime.
Ensure the shop is appropriately staffed during daily and emergency operations and monitor shop costs.

Strong research, evaluation, and record‑keeping skills.
Considerable knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance, inspection, and repair.
Knowledge of federal and state environmental and safety regulations for fleet management and shop practices.
Knowledge of supervisory principles and ability to supervise and train others.
Skill in procuring goods and services efficiently.
Skill in using computers, hand and power tools, and advanced diagnostic equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to obtain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain compliance.
Proficiency operating various types of equipment and performing heavy manual labor.
Strong research, evaluation, and record‑keeping abilities.
Considerable knowledge of general shop practices and equipment maintenance.
