General Summary

Use independent professional judgment, analytical skills, and the nursing process to provide a full range of delegated, interdependent, and independent nursing services to patients.

Demonstrate clinical competence, compassion, customer service orientation, focus on process and outcomes, and cost‑consciousness within the framework of the Seven Dimensions of Patient Care and Benner’s Domains of Nursing Practice.

Coordinate development of a multi‑disciplinary plan of care in accordance with Nursing Problem Care Sets, age‑specific requirements, professional and regulatory requirements to ensure appropriate length of stay, efficient use of resources, and achievement of quality outcomes.

Provide patient care that respects patients’ rights, dignity, values, culture, preferences, and expressed needs; assess patient/family needs for information and education; plan and implement patient teaching; evaluate effectiveness of educational interventions.

Alleviate patient fears and anxiety through skilled application of professional and interpersonal communication.

Utilize pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic approaches to ensure patient comfort and relief of pain; involve patient, family, and significant others in the development of the plan of care.

Collaborate with patients/families, hospital staff, and community agencies to develop discharge plans that prepare patients for continued care needs.

Maintain and complete admission assessment, shift assessment, medication reconciliation, and risk factor assessment (fall, skin breakdown, VTE, aspiration).

Document nursing interventions (NIC) and progress toward outcomes (NOC); record patient education; evaluate outcomes at each shift.

Perform and assist with basic nursing procedures (dressing changes, catheterization, NG tube insertion, suctioning). Implement assigned medical interventions and standing orders.

Execute peripheral IV therapy; obtain and process body fluid specimens; perform blood capillary glucose monitoring; administer medications, IVs, and blood products per policy.

Prepare patients for surgery or invasive procedures; assist with procedures; operate equipment (IV pumps, PCA pumps, epidural pumps, feeding pumps, patient beds).

Monitor patient physiological parameters, interpret changes, and intervene appropriately; document interventions.

Recognize acute changes in respiratory, neurologic, cardiac, and urinary status; respond with direct intervention; obtain physician or team notification as required.

Initiate CPR and other life‑threatening emergency interventions when necessary.

Support families in crisis or grieving processes; ensure quality of care practices and safety; utilize universal precautions and restraints documentation per policy.

Promote a physically safe environment; enforce cost‑effective supply use; assist in evaluating new products, procedures, and nursing practices.

Lead and support nursing staff: communicate expectations, observe patient care, assist team members, resolve conflicts, and maintain a healthy work environment.

Participate in teaching and mentoring of student nurses; complete required safety and unit education requirements.

Adapt to changes in unit workload, patient census, and staffing levels; provide leadership during changes.

Education / Experience Requirements

Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Michigan Board of Nursing obtained within 2 months (60 days) of hire date or transfer date required.

Certified BLS provider (Basic Life Support) credentialed from the American Heart Association obtained within 3 months (90 days) of hire date or transfer date required; or Certified Instructor.

Graduate of an approved professional RN nursing program.

Approximately 3 to 9 months of on‑job experience required for acquisition of unit and departmental policies, procedures, and standards.
