
Solid Waste Mechanic
Outagamie County, Appleton, WI, United States
Reporting directly to the Solid Waste Superintendent, the Solid Waste Equipment/Maintenance Technician performs generalized labor and technical skills in the maintenance and repair of machinery, buildings and equipment.
Monday–Friday: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM; Approximately one Saturday per month: 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
Responsibilities
Coordinates and manages parts inventory, including ordering, tracking, and maintaining stock levels of filters, components, and maintenance supplies
Maintains accurate records of parts usage, vendor orders, inventory levels, and preventative maintenance schedules
Performs routine preventative hourly interval maintenance on heavy equipment used in landfill operations
Ensures timely replacement of filters, fluids, and wear components to minimize equipment downtime
Executes skilled technical work across multiple trades, including mechanical, electrical/electronics, pneumatic controls, and HVAC systems
Performs skilled and semi-skilled repairs and maintenance on machinery, buildings, and equipment
Organizes and maintains the service building, parts room, and storage areas with clear labeling and efficient inventory systems
Installs electrical conduit, wiring, switching devices, controls, outlets, fixtures, motors, and related equipment
Tests, troubleshoots, and evaluates equipment performance using diagnostic tools such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, pyrometers, and pressure gauges
Tests and troubleshoots HVAC controls, automation systems, security systems, and fire alarm systems
Performs maintenance activities including construction, welding, brazing, soldering, and plumbing
Inspects, maintains, and repairs pumps, fans, valves, and motors
Troubleshoots, adjusts, repairs, and replaces electrical, electronic, and pneumatic relays
Prepares and documents preventative maintenance records and completed work orders
Operates equipment as needed for testing, diagnostics, and production
Communicates equipment issues, inventory needs, and operational concerns to supervisors
Maintains regular and reliable attendance and works overtime as required
Performs other duties as assigned
Maintenance Technicians working within the Solid Waste Landfill and/or Transfer Station Operations may receive training and/or perform all or some of the following:
Receives training on the methane collection field, ensures functionality of the wells, and monitors the quality of the methane.
Receives training in landfill operations to include spreading and compacting refuse
Receives training in the safe operation of equipment at the transfer station in how to process materials and loads transfer trucks
May be required to operate other equipment at various locations on site in support of landfill diversion or other resource recovery programs
Installs daily spray on or other alternative landfill cover systems
Qualifications
Two years' experience in equipment preventative maintenance and repair.
General experience in facility or plant maintenance work.
Two years technical school training and trade certification preferred.
Or, any combination of education and experience which provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
Within one year of employment valid State of Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License Class B with endorsement N (Tanker) is required. As well as the ability to legally operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV's) with Air Brakes.
Possess a Valid Driver's License and maintain.

Knowledge of and ability to operate and service trucks, tractors, and light equipment.
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, etc.
Ability to read gauges, dials, etc.
Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and figure simple mathematical calculations.
Ability to organize and schedule work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
Understanding of basic electronics related to computerized building maintenance systems and ability to troubleshoot and program these systems.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical or mechanical trades.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved.
Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the trades involved.
Ability to detect defects in equipment and to make proper repairs or adjustments.
Ability to lead a small group of semi-skilled workers and custodians.
Ability to interpret and work from pencil sketches and diagrams.
Ability to stoop, bend and lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
