Position Summary
The Licensed Veterinary Technician will work within the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Pet Health Center (PHC), performing a variety of clinical and administrative duties, including patient care, specimen collection, and support for diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, dentistry, and surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor the receiving schedule and technician appointments.
Maintain and update patient records, input charges, and enter procedure and consultation fees.
Collect specimens, perform diagnostic procedures (glucose monitoring, skin scraping, biopsies, allergy testing, endoscopy, electrocardiology, echocardiography, cytology preparations, etc.).
Carry out patient treatments: dental procedures, otic lavage, wound clipping, prepping, flushing, bandaging, casts, suturing, catheterization, venipuncture, cystocentesis, injections, medicating, intubation, CPR, and drug dosage calculations.
Assist clinicians with neurology examinations and anesthesia support, including patient prep, administration of anesthetic agents, and monitoring during procedures.
Handle sedation and recovery of patients.
Operate and prepare diagnostic imaging equipment; obtain radiographic images.
Support surgical procedures as a scrub nurse, including maintaining a sterile environment and instrument use.
Coordinate patient transport between the PHC and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Assist and mentor senior veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and new nursing staff in all PHC duties.
Enter laboratory work into the lab computer system and verify results.
Field questions, consults, and calls for clinicians, and maintain adherence to infectious disease protocols when cleaning and organizing the ward.
Provide timely patient callbacks and improve patient receiving efficiency.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Technical knowledge in veterinary assistance acquired through apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or professional certificate.
Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician program.
Passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) with a confirmed Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) license in Georgia, or ability to obtain an LVT license within six months.
Preferred Qualifications
Active LVT license in the state of Georgia.
Experience in a general veterinary practice.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Capable of handling animals and working in stressful situations.
Proficient in phlebotomy, venipuncture, and specimen handling.
Ability to perform basic formula calculations for weight and medication doses.
Strong knowledge of animal anatomy.
Competency with medical/surgical equipment, including care, cleaning, and maintenance.
Understanding of sterilization practices and infection control.
Physical Demands
Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently on hard floor surfaces.
Manual dexterity sufficient for handling delicate equipment and heavy objects.
Wear protective gear (mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, goggles).
Work for long periods with arms extended.
Operate in an environment with high animal sounds, bodily fluids, and open wounds.
