
Supervisory Social Worker - Intensive Outpatient Program Substance Use Disorder

Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
Education: Must hold a master’s degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools in candidate status do not meet this requirement until full accreditation is achieved. A doctoral degree in social work may not substitute for a master’s degree.

Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at a master’s level. Current state requirements may be found at http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/. Grade Determinations: Supervisory Social Worker is GS‑12 and requires one year of experience at the GS‑11 grade level, advanced practice skills, and supervision experience. Requires advanced practice level licensure or certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines; knowledge of supervisory duties including clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation, quality improvement; ability to provide clinical social work services, staff training, and development; interpersonal relationship skills with employees, team leaders, and managers. KSAs must be reflected in resume duties.
Preferred Experience: Experience with substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, including challenging comorbid conditions, outpatient, residential care, and case management.
Physical Requirements: May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing, wearing personal protective equipment, and undergoing annual TB screening.
Work Environment: Office clinic setting with normal safety precautions; requires managing multiple tasks and handling stressful situations.
Duties
Total Rewards of an Allied Health Professional: Supervisory and clinician/lead responsibilities for all Substance Use Disorder (SUD) related care in the assigned Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Ensures access and quality of SUD care for Veterans.
Location: Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO) – Mental Health – Community Based Outpatient VA Clinic, Springfield, MO.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees day‑to‑day operations of the IOP, leading and auditing for Joint Commission compliance, requiring biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plan completion and review, clinically indicated interventions, fidelity to program requirements, urine drug screens, transportation arrangements, and collaboration among IOP clinical staff, VA‑contracted residential staff, general mental health staff, medical assistants, trauma recovery clinic, primary care, hospital care, and mental health prescribers.
Reporting: Reports directly to the Director of SUD Services, then to the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health, and finally to the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health.
Clinical and Supervisory Care: Primarily during clinic hours but may be called on occasion for collaboration with VA‑contracted staff during off hours.
Supervision: Operates under general supervision of the Director of SUD Services/Care Line Manager who establishes objectives and department priorities.
Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑4:30 pm (subject to change based on service needs).
Relocation Incentive: Not Authorized. Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized. EDRP: Ineligible for incentive. Former EDRP participants are ineligible.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases. A higher step rate may be determined for higher or unique qualifications.
Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time off, including 13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid federal holidays per year. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25 % of eligible costs, capped at $416.66 per month.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5 % VA contribution.
Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care, and other federal insurance programs that can be carried into retirement.
Telework: Available on an Ad Hoc basis.
