Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida.
Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months.
Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months.
Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and coordinate the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift.
Delegate post assignments, specific duty assignments, coordinate leave use, and ensure accurate completion of attendance and leave reports.
Work with employees to ensure proper security coverage.
Conduct periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and give additional duties or instructions.
May take or recommend non-appealable disciplinary action or recommend appealable disciplinary action to higher level management.
Supervise searches for contraband and make daily inspections of buildings and grounds.
Inspect the physical plant for security concerns and maintain proper sanitation standards.
Circulate throughout the institution observing officers’ performance.
Conduct performance evaluations.
Schedule and/or coordinate training programs for subordinates.
Conduct continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures.
Supervise and coordinate body cavity searches as authorized.
Authorize non-emergency applications of force per DC Rule 33‑3.0065(3).
Supervise inmates at the level of risk they present; manage inmate housing areas, enforce rules and sanitation standards.
Transport inmates using approved restraints and observe relevant laws, policies and procedures.
Conduct accurate head counts, maintain custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter, and escort inmates within the secured perimeter.
Perform crisis intervention functions to include restraining violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, and preventing escapes using approved deadly or non‑deadly force, restraints or other approved methods.
Provide emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents to include CPR, first aid, implementation of evacuation procedures, security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation.
Conduct inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas.
Physically check doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security.
Attend mandatory and other training.
Perform other related duties as required.
