
Animal Resources Team Leader

The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department exists to serve MD Anderson research programs. Our primary aim is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards.

The Animal Resources Team Leader contributes directly to the institution’s research mission by supporting accredited animal care programs and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines. The Animal Resources Team Leader works closely with supervisors and technical staff to maintain operational continuity and high standards across assigned areas.
The ideal candidate for the Animal Resources Team Leader role will demonstrate previous animal care experience and the ability to work onsite in conditions that include expected exposure to animal odors.
The salary range for this position is Minimum $25.74 — Midpoint $30.77 — Maximum $36.09 per hour, based on a 40-hour work week.
Typical work schedule: Onsite Monday – Friday with rotational weekends.
Work location: Texas Medical Center.

Responsibilities
Task Coordination & Documentation
Assist supervisors with direction for daily operations and task prioritization.
Support supervision, training, monitoring, and evaluation of assigned personnel.
Report daily operational, personnel, and administrative issues to the Animal Resource Supervisor.
Serve as backup for all husbandry and cage wash positions.
Participate in compliance functions including IACUC, AAALAC, and USDA activities.
Monitor electronic facility management systems.
Record data in appropriate hardcopy and electronic systems in a timely manner.
Document completion of assigned tasks using the electronic task management system.
Complete all written documentation clearly and legibly.
Daily Observations & Backup
Monitor assigned areas to ensure tasks are performed appropriately.
Perform routine duties of assigned personnel as needed.
Serve on rotation as weekend and holiday supervisor.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
Monitor overall facility conditions and report issues to the area supervisor.
Ensure equipment sanitization follows established schedules.
Other Duties
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: An Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree
Work Experience
Required: Four years animal care experience in an animal hospital or clinic, research facility, or related field to include two years in specialized housing and/or technical procedures, or two years required experience with an Associate’s degree, or no experience required with a Bachelor’s degree
Preferred: Prior animal care experience
Licenses and Certifications
Required: Laboratory Animal Technician certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within 180 days, and any employee hired or rehired after September 1, 2012 must possess required certification
