Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, Medical Assistants perform clinical, laboratory, and clerical support activities in hospital ambulatory services, outpatient clinics, and laboratories. Incumbents assist physicians or other medical personnel in patient care, preparing patients for procedures, recording vital data, performing standardized routine laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing. They also greet patients, produce reports, answer telephones, input data, and schedule appointments.

NY HELPS Program
This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, the title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, with no examination required. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications. Temporary appointments may be converted to permanent non-competitive status after satisfactory performance, followed by transition to competitive status at a future date.

Distinguishing Characteristics
Non-supervisory; performs clinical duties at least 50% of the time in accordance with prescribed procedures.

Illustrative Duties

Place patient in examination rooms and document using the medical record (electronic or paper), including medications, vitals, and primary reason for the visit.

Perform screening and measuring procedures, including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, EKG, and documentation.

Maintain adequate supply of medical inventory in each exam room.

Ensure cleanliness of each exam room.

Prepare rooms for patients and specific procedures as needed.

Order supplies as needed.

Adhere to protocol for patient flow.

Prepare patient for exam or laboratory test, answer routine questions, and assist physician with examination process, including chaperoning patients during clinical exams.

Prepare and distribute patient information packets relating to the specific illness or procedure.

Assist patients who have difficulty ambulating and escort/transport them to other areas.

Check lab orders, process orders, and perform specimen collection per order.

Pre-clean, prepare, and high-level disinfect instruments according to established procedures and dispose of contaminated supplies per policy.

Assist physician with procedures.

Under direction of a registered nurse or physician, obtain peripherally drawn blood specimens; obtain and transmit 12‑lead EKG; obtain blood‑glucose levels via point‑of‑care testing and notify registered nurse; perform glucometer quality control checks per established policies.

Adhere to hospital policy regarding HIPAA, OSHA, universal precautions, and proper patient identification per SBUH policy and procedure.

Summon assistance in emergency situations and obtain needed equipment.

Do not perform duties that involve professional judgment, critical thinking, assessment, or provision of skilled care.

Support Activities

Greet patients and family, direct and escort them to appropriate locations, respond to routine visitor questions, monitor patient flow, and communicate as needed.

Schedule appointments, including return visits or additional laboratory tests, provide instructions, and handle appointment changes.

Answer phones, screen and route calls as appropriate, and take accurate messages. Refer problematic calls to appropriate parties and contact other areas as needed.

Answer routine patient questions related to scheduling and additional testing.

Prepare daily patient scheduling reports.

Maintain stock in patient care area, conduct inventory, and reorder supplies based on established requirements using automated and manual purchase processes.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of full‑time experience performing clinical and clerical support activities in a health‑care setting, or completion of a medical‑assistant program at a college, university, technical school, or vocational school.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with electronic medical record (EMR).

BLS or HeartSaver certification.

Current certification as a medical assistant.

Physical Demands

Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing, walking, lifting, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Lifting supplies and equipment.

Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.

Salary Range
Estimated at $40,391 per year. Final salary will be based on validated experience.
