What You Will Do
We are searching for a Biologist to provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute of Aging. The primary objective is to provide research services and deliverables through performance of support services for the Confocal Imaging Facility core of NIA IRP. This is a full-time opportunity located in Baltimore, MD.
Perform confocal microscopy image acquisition and analysis to support biological research studies.
Prepare biological samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including fixation, resin embedding, ultrathin sectioning, post-staining, immunogold labeling, and negative staining.
Prepare and manage laboratory solutions and chemicals in accordance with established protocols and safety standards.
Conduct immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunocytochemistry (ICC), and immunofluorescence (IF) assays.
Apply functional knowledge of super‑resolution microscopy techniques to support advanced imaging needs.
What You Will Need
Master’s Degree
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a biological research laboratory applying classic embedding and sample preparation techniques, including ultramicrotomy for electron microscopy
Minimum of two (2) years of hands‑on experience operating scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and/or transmission electron microscopes (TEM)
Proficiency in confocal light microscopy and digital imaging of biological systems
Experience using automated imaging systems with light or electron microscopy
Familiarity with 3D reconstruction software and imaging workflows
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Experience with FIJI‑Image J and/or Zeiss Zen
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD Public Trust. Candidates must receive approved adjudication of their Public Trust prior to onboarding. Candidates with an active Public Trust or existing suitability are preferred.
What Would Be Nice To Have
Experience with cryo‑fixation preparation techniques and cryo‑electron microscopy
Experience with focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy (FIB‑SEM) or other volumetric electron microscopy techniques
The annual salary range for this position is $65,000.00 – $108,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
