Overview
An Emergency Department Nurse is a highly specialized healthcare professional who provides medical emergency and clinic-type patient care in a hospital setting, recognizing, stabilizing, and planning patient care activities based on patient acuity.
Responsibilities
Follow Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) guidelines
Follow Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) guidelines
Follow Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines
Orthopedic splinting
Provide advanced cardiac care, including manual defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, and transcutaneous pacing
Perform electrocardiogram monitoring, including 12‑lead ECG
Establish vascular access for medication administration and fluid resuscitation via peripheral IV cannulation, EJ IV cannulation (with competency), and intraosseous cannulation (with competency)
Utilize noninvasive diagnostic devices such as pulse oximetry and capnography
Place a nasogastric tube and perform gastric suctioning
Administer medications via intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous, sublingual, endotracheal, rectal, and intraosseous routes
Use a glucometer for diabetic patients
Ventilator and IV pump management
Administer a variety of medications
Utilize the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) for patient triage
Qualifications
Graduation from a State Board of Nursing School RN program
Licensure by the Alabama Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
ACLS certification within first year and maintenance thereafter
PALS certification within first year and maintenance thereafter
MOAB or equivalent training
