Animal Resources Technician- IL- Animal Resources

Summary
The Animal Resources Technician is responsible for the care and maintenance of the Animal Research Facilities. The position reports to the Supervisor of Animal Resources and may receive direction from the consulting veterinarian and the Associate Director, Research Operations. The role requires working weekends and holidays on a rotation basis.

Responsibilities

Maintain animal resources in accordance with current federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to laboratory animals.

Update knowledge of current regulations and obtain additional regulatory information as needed.

Observe or detect alterations in animal room environment including temperature, air exchange, and light cycles.

Recognize common signs of clinical illness in laboratory animals.

Provide husbandry care of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner using equipment under established procedures.

Handle, restrain, and determine the sex of all common laboratory animals.

Assist with various methods of animal identification and maintain accurate records.

Filing necessary paperwork and maintaining records.

Observe and report irregularities in laboratory animals such as variation in dietary habits, abnormal stool or urine specimens, unusual behaviors, and deaths.

Work in cage wash area.

Provide general technical assistance to a supervisor or investigator.

Provide routine treatments as instructed, including ear mite medication and clipping of overgrown teeth.

Maintain personal hygiene and sanitation procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Regular, predictable, in‑person attendance is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Other Qualifications
Strong understanding of computers is required; training will be provided. The position requires learning some of the unique processes that the AZ and IL campuses have in place.

Education and/Experience

High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Good written and oral communication skills required.

Preferred: Two years experience in a professional animal care setting; small animal handling experience is a plus.

Certificate from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) desirable.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Physical Demands
The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear; regularly requires walking, reaching with hands and arms, and occasionally standing. The employee must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The position requires ability to work with animals.
