Overview
The Rehabilitation Aide works under the direction of a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech‑language pathologist, physical therapy assistant, or occupational therapy assistant, assisting in providing therapeutic services, related clinical activities, and maintaining the orderly function of the department.

Responsibilities

Assists the therapists and therapy assistants in providing safe, effective and quality therapeutic interventions for patients, considering the patient's age and developmental level, and performs delegated tasks under the direction of an occupational/physical therapist or speech‑language pathologist.

Transports patients to and from therapy in an effective manner, incorporating safe management of transfer equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers.

Prepares patient treatment area for therapy sessions, maintains a clean field, cleans equipment per infection control guidelines, and returns patient rooms to order.

Maintains supplies and keeps the department safe, neat and orderly, following JCAHO and biomedical guidelines for safe equipment.

Coordinates and collaborates patient care/clinical activities with patients, families, therapists and other healthcare team members for efficient communication.

Performs basic clerical functions: answering phone, scheduling, taking messages, copying, filing, entering charges, and verifying patient charges; collects data for performance improvement, departmental initiatives, and scorecard projects.

Attends in‑services, departmental meetings, and participates in program development and growth, maintains competencies and completes peer reviews for performance evaluations.

Serves as a resource and team member to other rehabilitation aides, aiding in new employee orientation and competency sign‑offs.

Orients new employees; works under direct supervision of professional staff or per site policy.

Interacts with patients, physicians, other healthcare providers, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public; assists therapists in physical, occupational, and speech‑language areas as requested.

Accesses, updates, and protects confidential patient records, following HIPAA guidelines.

Recommends cost containment initiatives in the immediate work area.

Utilizes judgment through patient observation skills and provides input to therapists.

Allows therapists to provide early therapeutic intervention on patients requiring additional assistance; contributes to meeting clerical functions.

Works primarily indoors in a clinical setting, may be required to work at other Carilion facilities; requires physical activity with patients, lifting, manipulating, pushing, pulling, bending, walking; may involve exposure to blood and bodily fluids requiring standard precautions.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care under supervision or as per policy.

Participates in holiday and weekend rotations as required.

Qualifications
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

1 year of patient‑related experience or equivalent.

Life Support:

BLS‑certified (Carilion approved program) within six months of employment and maintained annually.

Other Minimum Qualifications:

Complete hospital orientation and yearly performance evaluation requirements; complete unit orientation and competencies within 3 months; maintain annual department competencies; good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to comprehend and follow instructions; teamwork; prioritize responsibilities; work in fast‑paced, changing environment; basic computer knowledge for data entry and assisting therapists.
