About the Position
St. Louis County department of Public Health is hiring an Animal Caregiver to provide support for the daily health and welfare of animals in the shelter.

Compensation & Benefits

Responsibility

Walk dogs daily to ensure they receive adequate exercise, socialization, and stress relief.

Provide enrichment activities such as playtime, treat puzzles, and positive interaction to support animals’ mental and emotional health.

Perform cleaning of kennels, including removing waste, refreshing bedding, and sanitizing as needed.

Monitor animal behavior and report any signs of illness, injury, or distress to the supervisor immediately.

Assist with feeding, watering, and general care of animals as directed.

Follow all safety protocols and shelter policies regarding animal handling and sanitation.

Provide excellent customer service and act as a positive representative of the shelter when interacting with visitors, volunteers, and community partners.

Qualifications
Equivalent to six months of experience working with animals in a veterinary or similar environment.

Selection and Appointment
A selection committee will evaluate qualifications. The interview will constitute 100% of the earned grade. A qualifying grade of 70 or more is required. Candidates may be asked to complete a Conviction Questionnaire within 3 days. The top five candidates will be certified to the Department Director for final decision.

All applicants who receive conditional offers must submit a urinalysis for drug screening. The cost is covered by the County.

COVID-19 Vaccination Policy
All newly hired employees must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination before starting service. Acceptable proof includes CDC vaccination cards, healthcare provider documentation, electronic health record, or state immunization system record. Full vaccination is defined per FDA Emergency Use Authorization guidelines.

Individuals with a CMS clinical contraindication or sincerely held religious beliefs may request an exemption. Exempt employees must wear facial coverings and submit to weekly testing.
