Formerly Aurora Santa Rosa Hospital, SRBHH was opened in 2016 and is regarded as an integral part of the greater Santa Rosa and Northern California mental health system of care. Conveniently located in the North Bay, the hospital consists of 144 acute psychiatric inpatient beds. SRBHH serves adolescents and adults, treating both mental health and co‑occurring psychiatric and substance abuse conditions.

Lead Mental Health Technician (Assessment and Referral)

PAY RANGE
$26.50 per hour

Director of Assessment and Referral

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The Mental Health Technician IV provides direct patient care to all patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders, supports the therapeutic milieu, and ensures safety and well‑being of patients. Responsibilities include nursing assistance as required for adolescents, adults, or older adults as assigned, and maintaining knowledge of training and occupational health hazards such as blood‑borne pathogen exposure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety: Orients clients to the admission process, searches personal effects, and documents appropriately in the patient record. Monitors clients one‑to‑one and reports any activity that poses a danger.

Crisis Management: Applies skills from the Managing Assaultive Behaviors course to assess and intervene safely; participates in debriefings after seclusion, manual hold, or other significant events.

Patient Care: Implements treatment plans, monitors patients during admission, communicates behavior information to the admission team, and maintains patient and family communication when appropriate.

Safety Monitor: Observes interactions between patients and staff in the intake area, reports suspicious activity, and notifies the nurse in charge of potential boundary violations.

Patient Attendant: Accompanies and transports patients, assists with daily living activities, maintains a safe, orderly, and therapeutic environment, and enforces the unit’s behavior‑management system.

Patient Records: Maintains patient, program, and department documentation and performs clerical tasks that support care and operations.

Training Activities: Completes orientation and competency assessments; participates in professional growth activities.

Other Duties: Upholds organizational ethics and customer‑service standards and performs related duties as requested.

REQUIREMENTS
Education / Licensure:

High school, GED, or equivalent.

Current CPR certification or to obtain within initial orientation.

Completion of a verbal de‑escalation and physical intervention program approved by the CNO.

Knowledge and Experience:

1 year of inpatient psychiatric experience.

High‑school reading and writing skills; legible handwriting.

Current Handle With Care Certificate or to obtain within 30 days.

Familiarity with medical and psychological terminology and human‑behavior principles (preferred).

Basic knowledge of human growth and development (helpful).

Experience with therapeutic limit‑setting or understanding of level‑systems (helpful).

Ability to maintain professional boundaries.

Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrates professional boundaries and treats patients with respect.

Assesses routine situations and takes appropriate action.

Provides training to new and existing Mental Health Technicians.

Acts as liaison between Nursing Management and staff.

Uses de‑escalation techniques and sets limits appropriately.

Accepts feedback positively and applies it for improvement.

Follows all safety procedures, stays alert, and prevents danger.

Monitors and redirects colleagues as needed.

Assists Phlebotomy during blood draws.

Maintains organization of patient items.

Supports daily living activities and measures vital signs.

Responds calmly to alarms and codes.

Co‑ordinates with the Inpatient Psychiatric RN for safety during assessment.

Conducts and documents rounds on patients.

Leads code response when an RN is absent.

Ensures staff have radios when patients leave the unit.

Supports a safe and therapeutic environment.

Communicates clearly and professionally with families, referral sources, and caseworkers.

Assists in staffing coverage and shift planning.

Maintains confidentiality of patients.

Shows sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.

Teaches or assists with activities of daily living (helpful).

Works independently and as part of a team; flexible with scheduling.

Exhibits good judgment, problem solving, and decision‑making skills.

Maintains accurate time records and rest‑break compliance.

Thrives in a fast‑paced environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to exercise self‑control in volatile situations, move between tasks, and handle interruptions. Must stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and grasp; lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Requires moderate visual and hearing acuity. Performs repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers.
