Position Description
The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) offers both administrative and clinical nursing leadership to our nursing department. This role involves assisting the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in directing the provision of 24‑hour nursing services for the hospital in alignment with the facility's philosophy, goals, and standards, as well as the level of care requirements.

The ADON will review the progress, quality, and effectiveness of all nursing programs, initiate developments and improvements, formulate plans for new programs and/or existing programs, and maintain active involvement and awareness of all patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.

This role will routinely round the hospital to assess patient and staff needs, review job assignments, and audit charts for performance improvement and compliance.

The ADON will also assist with recruitment efforts for the nursing department, establish and participate in nursing and patient care committees as needed, and coordinate learning and development opportunities for staff.

This position is supervised by the CNO and the ideal candidate should be comfortable performing as the Acting CNO as needed. The ADON must be adaptable and a collaborative team player to meet the evolving needs of the facility and our diverse populations.

Candidates should be able to effectively engage with all levels of stakeholders, including CEO, physicians, various departments as well as patients and their families.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Manage the nursing operations and oversight of 10 inpatient units encompassing child, adolescent, dual diagnosis, SPMI, and general adult populations.

Provide supervision, training and guidance to Nurse Managers, Program Coordinators, RN's, LPN's, and Mental Health Technicians.

Coordinate and maintain nursing services across all units, including overseeing daily staffing of nursing team to meet the demands of patient populations and census.

Successful cross‑functional collaboration and communication between various in‑house departments and outside entities.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of nursing; Master's degree in nursing or mental health or health care preferred.

Both psychiatric and med surge experience strongly desired.

Current unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Joint Commission, OMHSA, DDAP experience preferred.

Minimum of 2 years’ experience in nursing supervisory role or leadership experience and/or strong dedicated leadership experience in psychiatric nursing.
