Position Summary
The University of Georgia Microbiome Research group seeks a motivated and hardworking postdoctoral fellow to support and develop novel approaches for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting human microbiome data. The role focuses on understanding how the microbiome changes across diverse demographics and disease states, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, diabetes, and cancer. Candidates will primarily work in metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, with opportunities to summarize other large datasets such as population demographics.

Responsibilities

Collect and analyze data – 85% of time

Write and report research – 5% of time

Present results to the scientific community and prepare publications – 10% of time

Apply Python (e.g., QIIME, QIIME2), R (e.g., Phyloseq, DESeq2, ANCOM, PICRUSt), and pipelines for shotgun sequencing, metatranscriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics

Perform statistical analyses using linear, mixed, and nonlinear models, as well as non‑parametric methods on large datasets

Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners, including microbiologists, nutritionists, clinicians, and allied health experts

Support career development goals under the guidance of Drs. Jeferson Lourenco and Franklin West

Qualifications

Ph.D. in data science, animal science, microbiome, quantitative and computational sciences, or a related field

Experience with programming in Python and R, and familiarity with microbiome analysis tools (QIIME, QIIME2, Phyloseq, DESeq2, ANCOM, PICRUSt)

Experience analyzing shotgun sequencing, metatranscriptomics, proteomics, and/or metabolomics data

Proficiency in statistical modeling of large datasets and non‑parametric analyses

Excellent oral and written communication skills and a proven publication record (preferred)

Physical Demands & Other Requirements

Minimal lifting/bending typical of an office/lab environment

Travel to multiple locations as needed

Driving is required; a valid driver’s license is necessary

No direct patient care or child interaction required
