Summary
The phlebotomist is responsible for collecting quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distributing specimens to the proper departments, and preparing and handling specimens for laboratory analysis.

Responsibilities

Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures; responds to the needs of customers of all ages and helps resolve exceptions; educates patients and laboratory clients in proper test protocol.

Accurately interprets physician orders to collect high‑quality specimens.

Performs invasive procedures—including venipuncture, micro‑capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures—for patients of all age groups by following exact protocols and procedures, including patient preparation and glucose dosages.

Handles specimens, selecting the appropriate specimen type to ensure high‑quality, reliable test results; provides timely distribution to reduce turnaround time and improve patient care; communicates with and prepares esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories; maintains specimen integrity.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Follows patient registration procedures where required.

Follows strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens.

Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices; follows hand hygiene policies and uses personal protective equipment as required.

Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) to schedule workload, interpret orders, place results, retrieve billing information, and assist with patient registration while maintaining confidentiality.

Adheres to laboratory policies, procedures, and federal regulations (CLIA, CAP, OSHA).

Treats patients ranging in age from birth to 100+ years with competence.

Has access to the medication room to use the pneumatic tube station (where applicable).

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Experience:

Completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical experience, or a minimum of 3–4 years of phlebotomy experience.

Certifications:

Valid driver's license (required to drive company vehicle). Annual OSHA training completing exposure control plan.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Communication, customer service, and organizational skills.

Knowledge of specimen integrity guidelines, laboratory test and medical terminology, current laboratory policies and protocols.

Ability to use computer systems, including LIS and HIS.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain regular, predictable attendance.

Physical / Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or substitutes.

Ability to move freely about the facility, perform job functions, sit/stand/walk for long periods, and perform postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other infectious materials; compliance with MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, and repeated movements.

Physical demand level: Light. Occasional lifting or carrying of 11–20 lbs.; frequent lifting of 10 lbs.; walking/standing/pushing/pulling of arm/leg controls.
