Job Summary
The Old Red Medical Museum is looking for a motivated and reliable Federal Work-Study Student who is interested in UTMB’s history, museums, and behind-the-scenes work with unique collections. This position is a great opportunity to gain hands‑on experience working with historical collections while supporting the museum operations, exhibition development, research initiatives, tours, and events.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Curator of the Old Red Medical Museum. The museum’s Student Assistant will work closely with museum staff, including the administrative coordinator and UTMB’s Students For Old Red.
Job Duties
Collections inventory: Undertake an inventory of the historical collections and update the entries in the museum’s database.
Collections organization: Make recommendations (e.g. numbering, labeling and their physical organization) to improve the organization of the collections.
Historical Research: Undertake research (e.g. Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections, Moody Medical Library) to support and inform exhibition and project development. (guidance provided)
University Representation: Serve as an ambassador for UTMB, the museum and Old Red.
Team Collaboration: Work effectively with museum staff, the UTMB community and visitors alike.
Preferred Qualifications
An interest in the history of medicine/Galveston’s history
Experience working independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines
