Job Description
Position Summary
North Marion School District is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented custodian to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming school environment. This position plays a vital role in supporting student learning and well‑being by ensuring that classrooms, common areas, and school grounds are well cared for and ready for daily use.
Custodians work closely with school staff and administration to create a positive atmosphere where students, staff, and the community feel comfortable and supported. This position requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, gyms, and other school areas
Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, wax, and maintain floors as assigned
Clean windows, walls, doors, furniture, and fixtures
Empty trash and recycling; ensure proper disposal of waste materials
Maintain restroom cleanliness and restock supplies
Set up and take down furniture and equipment for school events and activities
Perform minor repairs and report maintenance needs or safety concerns
Maintain school grounds, including litter removal and seasonal tasks (e.g., snow/ice removal, basic landscaping)
Secure buildings by locking/unlocking doors and monitoring facility safety
Safely handle and store cleaning chemicals and equipment in accordance with safety standards
Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and notify supervisor when replenishment is needed
Respond to spills, accidents, and other immediate custodial or safety needs
Work collaboratively with staff to support daily school operations
Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions
Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Successful background and criminal history clearance
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently
Willingness to learn proper cleaning methods, equipment use, and safety procedures
Ability to operate custodial equipment (or willingness to be trained)
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe environment
Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to a positive school culture
Ability to perform physical demands of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds), frequent standing, walking, bending, and moving equipment
Ability to work in environments that may include exposure to cleaning chemicals and occasional bodily fluids
