Job Description
NOTE: Must be a current employee with the district.

Work in Student Records Aug. 1 – Aug. 31 — 3 days a week. Exact time and dates to be determined mutually.

Prepare immunization records and work with families to register with medication needs, doctor’s orders, and medically high‑risk students.

Position Summary
This position is responsible for addressing the medical and emotional needs of students and staff on a daily as‑needed basis. The Health Room Assistant works as a team member with the school nurse, intervention specialist, counselor, principal, teachers, and parents.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with communicable disease control including classroom inspections for head lice.

Assist with school‑wide health screenings including schedules, records, materials and supplies.

Follow up on health care referrals by health specialist and assist families in accessing needed services.

Record health information in individual student health records.

Assist with maintenance of site lists of significant health conditions, student exemptions, and students receiving medication.

Administer first aid and student medications when the school nurse is not available, consistent with doctor and parental direction and school policies.

May provide colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings and/or medication(s) as authorized by the school nurse.

Assist with changing dressings, oxygen, insulin, nebulizers or inhalers, and assist with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches.

Maintain and update centralized records and materials.

Order centralized supplies and forms.

Complete required statistical reports.

Maintain and monitor supplies for classroom diabetes kits and field trip first aid kits.

Administer specialized physical health care services under the supervision of the school nurse when site level staff is unavailable, using standard procedures.

Adhere to requirements for confidentiality regarding students’ records; discreetly handle sensitive information pertaining to staff, parents and students.

Operate a computer to input, retrieve, and file data and text.

Follow board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities or a demonstrated commitment to engaging a diverse community.

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Either an Associate’s Degree or successful passing of the Educational Testing Service competency examination.

Training in CPR and First Aid (CPR and defibrillator training may be required).

Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions while producing accurate work.

Ability to interact with students, parents, staff, and community members warmly and confidently.

Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision making capabilities are essential.

Maintain confidentiality of all school and personnel matters.

Possess a valid Washington state driver’s license and a safe driving record; ability to transport students in district‑owned vehicles when necessary.

Desired Qualifications

Bilingual skills.

Knowledge of state codes related to school health service.

Experience administering first aid to ill or injured children.

Post‑high school education and/or training in health care and emergency medical treatment.

Physical and Environmental Requirements
The employee must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds, and may assist, move, or restrain students with greater weight when required. The employee will frequently sit, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak, and may need to perform extensive work at a computer terminal. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses is possible. Noise levels are moderate but can be loud at times.

Benefits
Employees anticipated to work 630 hours during the school year (September 1 through August 31) are eligible for medical, dental, vision, long‑term disability, and basic life insurance benefits.
