Purpose Statement
The job of Teacher – Elementary is to support the instructional process with specific responsibilities for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators; and responding to inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
Reporting to Site Administrator.
Essential Functions
Administers developmental testing programs and/or subject‑specific assessments to assess student competency levels and/or develop individual learning plans.
Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, communicating expectations and achievements, and developing methods for improvement and reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve overall student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
Provides counseling to students to improve performance, health status, problem‑solving techniques, and personal issues.
Demonstrates pedagogical approaches that engage learners, addressing individual student requirements.
Differentiates classroom work to provide instructional materials that address individualized learning within established lesson plans.
Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers to support an effective classroom program and individual student needs.
Facilitates student learning to achieve success in academics, interpersonal, and daily living skills through defined lesson plans.
Instructs students to improve academic success through a defined course of study.
Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
Monitors students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
Organizes age‑appropriate indoor and outdoor activities to ensure student participation in learning activities.
Participates on PLC team to review data and instructional practices.
Participates in staff, district, IEP, 504 meetings to convey and gather information required for performance of the functions.
Prepares written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors, etc.) to maintain student safety and comply with regulatory requirements.
Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, etc. to resolve issues and provide information or direction.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Proficient in applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment and software applications, teaching Arizona State‑recognized standards, and maintaining accurate records.
Knowledge of algebra and/or geometry, ability to read technical information, compose documents, facilitate group discussions, analyze situations, define issues, and draw conclusions. Familiarity with codes, policies, regulations, laws, age‑appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, stages of child development, and behavioral management strategies.
Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather, collect, and classify data; use job‑related equipment. Flexibility to work with others, adapt to changing priorities, maintain confidentiality, exhibit tact and patience, and work flexible hours.
Responsibilities
Work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; direct other persons within a small work unit; utilize resources from other work units often to perform job functions.
Work Environment
Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and significant fine‑finger dexterity. Performance involves 10% sitting, 40% walking, 50% standing. Exposure to temperature extremes and risk of injury or illness.
Experience
Job‑related experience is desired.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in a related area.
