Form Carpenter Journeyman

Position Summary
Carpenters are required to perform a variety of tasks including erecting and setting forms for vertical and horizontal concrete structures and site work, per specifications and drawings.

Responsibilities

Perform Journeyman level Carpentry work

Read and interpret measuring tools such as tape measure, speed square, framing square, etc. to perform tasks accurately.

Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and other written instructions and diagrams in order to perform tasks accurately.

Fully understand Plant North and drawing coordinates.

Set and place forms to proper elevations and locations, prepare the base, and install proper reinforcing.

Have experience in setting and erecting forms using a wide variety of materials and forming systems for vertical and horizontal concrete forming.

Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials, shape materials to prescribed measurements, and assemble, fasten with nails, dowel pins or glue.

Verify accuracy of structures with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.

Perform general carpentry tasks, such as building and installing barricades, decks, shelves, and any other miscellaneous site needs and duties that may arise.

Know how to form and finish walls, footers, grade beams, etc.

Lay out and properly build and place embeds, anchor bolts, etc.

Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.

Assist in placing/tying rebar.

Assist in placing and finishing concrete.

Disassemble, remove, and clean form materials.

Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.

Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision; must be able to take direction from a higher skilled worker or foreman.

Have basic knowledge of the construction processes involved in heavy industrial construction.

Support project with other tasks as directed by supervision.

A master journeyman must be able to direct a small crew and/or mentor journeyman and helpers.

Qualification: Education and Work Experience Requirements

4 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

NCCER Certification/License (preferred).

Minimum 4 years of experience in a journeyman level role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations.

When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.

Set a personal example of safe behavior.

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10s and 100s and be able to perform these operations using units weight measurement and volume.

Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.

Other duties may be assigned.

Physical Demands

Work up to a 12‑hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.

May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; use arms, hands, and legs fully; push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.

Stamina to perform these tasks repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.

Uncontrolled environmental conditions: constant change in weather and site conditions.

May involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.).

Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.

May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall‑protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.

Evaluate information based on measurable standards; see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.

Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.

Keep good balance and work at heights.

See well (either naturally or with correction).

Hear well (either naturally or with correction).

Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.

Hours
This position is a full‑time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to project requirements.

Travel
Travel required up to 90%; position requires presence directly on the project site location with intermittent travel to residence of record.
