Job Description

Springfield Public Schools (SPS) students represent diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio‑economic backgrounds, bringing rich perspectives, experiences and insights into the classroom. Qualified candidates must hold state certification and possess strong music content knowledge, a passion for teaching, excellent interpersonal skills, and solid classroom management abilities.

Duties

Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.

Plan a program of study that meets individual students’ needs, interests, and abilities.

Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, appropriate to students’ maturity and interests.

Guide learning toward achievement of district curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.

Prepare for assignments and provide written evidence upon supervisory request.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with physical limitations and needs of students or groups.

Implement the district’s philosophy, instructional goals, objectives and performance expectations through instruction and action.

Assess students’ accomplishments regularly; provide progress reports as required and communicate with parents as deemed necessary.

Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.

Diagnose learning challenges regularly, seeking assistance from district specialists as required.

Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

Follow the SPS code of conduct and develop, enforce, and maintain fair classroom behavior rules.

Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals and make written evaluations as required.

Maintain a professional growth program to satisfy district requirements and personal professional goals.

Participate actively in the contractually approved teacher evaluation process.

Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and decision‑making among staff; meetings are held during the extended day.

Attend traditional school‑sponsored activities as agreed upon by building administrators and faculty.

Contribute to district and building decisions regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well‑being.

Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.

Qualifications

Highly qualified with required competency in the content area.

Appropriate content/program area educator license (Music: Vocal/Instrumental/General) and grade level (All) licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate license.

Master’s Degree with appropriate content area license preferred and/or expected within five years.

Salary : $54,541 to $88,258 (BU Salary Schedule)
