The National Adoption Association (NAA) is seeking a
Chief Financial & Operating Officer (CFOO)
to join its senior leadership team. This hybrid CFO/COO role is a unique opportunity for an experienced nonprofit finance executive to help strengthen NAA's financial sustainability while also building the operational infrastructure needed to support growth, increasing complexity, and long-term impact.
Reporting to the CEO, the CFOO serves as NAA's lead executive for financial strategy, stewardship, and sustainability, with responsibility for budgeting, forecasting, compliance, audit oversight, reporting, and risk management across the organization. The CFOO also oversees core business operations, including systems, data, human resources, and facilities, and serves as a strategic partner who connects financial discipline with operational execution.

What You'll Lead
Financial strategy, planning, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
Audit, compliance, internal controls, and risk management
Financial oversight across grants, diversified revenue streams, and evolving business models
Business operations that support consistency, scalability, and financial sustainability
Ownership of internal systems, data, workflows, and operational infrastructure
Oversight of HR, facilities, and administrative operations
Strategic partnership with the CEO, Board, and senior leaders on organizational decisions and future growth
This role is well suited for a leader who is excited by both stewardship and building: someone who can protect the financial health of the organization while improving the systems, structure, and business operations that support scale.
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred
At least 10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience
At least 5 years in a senior financial leadership role such as CFO, VP of Finance, or Director of Finance
Strong nonprofit financial management experience, including fund accounting, grants, audits, compliance, and reporting
Experience managing complexity across multiple revenue streams
Experience building or improving business operations, systems, or organizational infrastructure
Ability to communicate clearly with boards, executive leaders, and non-financial staff
Sound judgment, collaborative leadership, and a practical, solution-oriented mindset

The ideal candidate will live in or around the Linthicum, Maryland area. This role requires occasional evenings and weekends and travel approximately three to five times per year for team meetings, events, and other organizational needs.
