Job Description
TITLE:

HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL HEAD COACH

DEPARTMENT:

Qualifications

A valid Arizona Department of Education issued Teaching Certificate (Athletic Coaching 7-12)

OR

National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Level 1 Certificate is required for

Varsity

level coaches but is preferred for other Head Coach positions. Varsity level coaches must also possess a valid NFHS First Aid, Health & Safety certificate.

Non-Varsity level Head Coaches must, at a minimum possess the following NFHS approved Certificates:

Fundamentals of Coaching

Concussion in Sports

First Aid, Health & Safety

Familiar with Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) organization and its bylaws/policies and procedures and other requirements (high school level only).

Collegiate level playing experience in the associated sport is highly desirable with high school level playing experience expected as a minimum requirement.

Previous successful coaching experience at the varsity level within the previous four years is highly preferred.

Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card within forty-five (45) days of employment.

Additional Qualifications for Cheer/Spiritline Head Coaches

Must possess a valid American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA) certification.

Must have successfully completed the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Information Course.

Must have successfully completed the NFHS Rules Interpretation Course.

Must have successfully completed the NFHS Cheer Safety Exam with a passing score of 75% or higher.

Job Goals
The Head Coach carries out the objectives of the sports program as directed by the Varsity Head Coach or Athletic Director/Coordinator as applicable. The Head Coach also instructs athletes with regard to individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training, while instructing and demonstrating behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes.

Performance Responsibilities

Complies with all HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.

Develops positive relations with students, parents, school staff and the public, including members of the media, boosters, officials, players, other coaches, school administration, and fans.

Serves as a positive role model for students, coaching staff, and the community.

Demonstrates knowledge of proven coaching theories, strategies, and techniques and works with student athletes of varying abilities, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds to effectively implement these attributes.

Instills commitment, discipline, sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork to all athletes and coaching staff.

The Head Coach performs other related duties as assigned by the Varsity High School Head Coach and/or Athletic Director/Coordinator as applicable.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability
Knowledge of

AIA rules, policies (high school level only), and athletic department handbook.

Effective coaching theories, strategies, and techniques appropriate for school athletes.

Federal and state laws, rules and regulations governing education and sports program implementation.

Budget preparation and management.

District’s constituents (i.e., boosters, etc.).

Supervision and evaluation of coaching staff.

Developing and evaluating extra-curricular programs.

Skill and Ability to

Motivate student athletes to participate and sustain their interests in the athletic program while excelling in instructional curriculum.

Create beneficial relationships and communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, students, vendors, other coaches and community members.

Apply leadership techniques.

Implement educational policies and procedures.

Supervise and evaluate coaching staff.

Analyze and problem solve.

Forecast trends; plan and implement goals.

Develop and manage athletic program budgets as needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Regularly required to talk or listen.

Frequently required to stand for long periods and to walk long distances.

Occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Varsity Head Coach and/or Athletic Director/Coordinator

Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Varsity Head Coach and/or Athletic Director/Coordinator in accordance with Governing Board policy.

Terms of Employment
Specific Season (Fall/Winter/Spring)

Salary
Salary for this position is via annual stipend and is set according to the Athletics Salary Schedule approved by the Governing Board.

Job Requirements

High School/Trade School degree preferred.
