
Fish and Wildlife Technician 2

Position: Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 – part‑time, temporary, hourly $25.58/hr in Oneida County, NY (Utica). The role is with Region 6 Bureau of Fisheries.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and perform field activities independently for project areas or counties within the region, or statewide program projects.
Collect fish, wildlife, and flora specimens for identification, abundance, size, and quality.
Coordinate and summarize data from sample collections and surveys.
Supervise construction and repair of habitat structures.
Conduct wild fish egg takes, reclamation, and liming activities.
Operate boats and ATVs, and handle trailering of equipment.
Work with a small crew (2‑3 people) in remote areas.
Hike and transport gear several miles over difficult terrain.
Lift up to 60 pounds and carry 35 pounds over rough terrain.
Assist in preparing media brochures and schedules, and develop and present public presentations.
Prepare and deliver fishing education programs and post public fishing‑rights boundaries.
Maintain, repair, and procure equipment; perform intermediate GIS tasks.
Supervise Fish and Wildlife Technician 1, interns, and volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.
One year of college coursework (at least 12 semester credit hours) in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field may substitute for one year of required experience.
Additional Requirements
Valid driver’s license or proof of transportation capability.
Ability to navigate difficult terrain.
Capacity to work in remote areas.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime, overnight travel, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Capability to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.
Certification to operate motorized boats or personal watercraft at the time of appointment or within two weeks.
Telecommuting may be available; discussed at interview.
Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify identity.
The position is hourly and funded through 3/31/2027, with potential continued employment beyond that date based on program needs.
