Job Description
Paraprofessional Tier 1 – Special Education

Qualifications

A minimum of thirty-six college hours from an accredited college or university is required. Pass the Paraprofessional test in the State of Missouri or the Missouri 20‑hour Online Substitute Training Program. Sixty college hours is preferred.

A valid Missouri Teaching Certificate is preferred.

Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Alternative qualifications as the board may consider appropriate.

Reports To
Building Principal, Executive Director – Pupil Services; Direct Supervisor: Special Education Classroom Teacher.

Job Goal
To assist a teacher, group of teachers, or the entire building in providing a well‑organized, smoothly functioning environment so that students can fully benefit from the instructional program and available resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.

Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.

Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on understanding of individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.

Operates and cares for instructional equipment used in the classroom.

Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.

Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.

Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial assignments set up and assigned by the teacher.

Assists with supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.

Maintains bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up‑to‑date.

Assists with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.

Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in oral communication activities.

Assists students in the library or media center.

Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and makeup work as assigned by the teacher.

Checks and records student attendance.

Helps students with clothing as necessary.

Assists with supervision of students.

Serves as the chief source of information for substitutes when the regular teacher is absent.

Substitutes for the teacher as assigned on an emergency basis.

Maintains high ethical standards and confidentiality regarding student information.

May perform routine clerical duties such as filing and typing.

Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.

Adheres to good safety practices.

Adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.

Other duties as required or assigned.

Physical Demands
Regular walking, hearing, speaking, and vision requirements. Ability to travel between district facilities. Moderate travel and physical activity required.
