Fitness Center Attendant
Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) Wellness and Fitness Center (WFC) supports campus-wide efforts to promote healthier lifestyles for students, faculty, staff, and community members through fitness and wellness initiatives. The Attendant helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment by providing friendly customer service, following facility policies and college procedures, and assisting with daily tasks such as monitoring equipment, ensuring safety, and supporting members.

Customer Service & Front Desk Operations

Greet members, answer questions, and provide accurate information about programs and policies.

Process membership and program payments, issue receipts, and balance cash drawer in accordance with college procedures.

Answer phone calls, take messages, and schedule facility orientations.

Support the sign-in and sign-out process, verifying student, staff, and community memberships.

Assist with facility tours and new member orientations.

Facility Oversight & Safety

Open and close the fitness center, ensuring the building is secure.

Monitor gym and activity areas to promote safe equipment use, policy compliance, and that college procedures are upheld.

Respond to incidents, injuries, or accidents, and notify appropriate staff or emergency services according to college protocol.

Enforce rules and help maintain a respectful, safe environment for all patrons.

Document and report any safety concerns, equipment issues, or incidents.

Cleaning & Equipment Maintenance

Regularly disinfect equipment and high-touch areas.

Ensure towels are available by rotating, laundering, and folding them consistently.

Keep equipment, locker rooms, and common areas clean and organized.

Monitor gym equipment for damage, report problems, and assist with basic maintenance tasks.

Additional Duties

Assist with Lost and Found updates and organization.

Encourage members to secure valuables and support theft reporting procedures.

Support team members as needed and participate in department and college-wide meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Wellness & Fitness Center.

Comfortable interacting with individuals from various backgrounds and experiences.

Fitness & Safety Awareness

Basic understanding of fitness equipment and safety protocols.

Ability to stay alert and respond effectively in emergency situations.

Familiarity with gym rules and a commitment to enforcing college policies and procedures respectfully.

Able to recognize and address safety hazards promptly.

Professionalism & Teamwork

Self-motivated, dependable, and able to work with minimal supervision.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

Willingness to support other team members and contribute to team goals.

Capable of representing the College at events, meetings, or activities when needed.

Technology & Administrative Skills

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications.

Ability to follow cash-handling college procedures and accurately process transactions (e.g., memberships, food, drink, apparel).

Comfortable using phone systems and scheduling tools.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Current CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within three (3) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution in Physical Education, Recreation, Exercise Physiology, Health Education, Exercise Science or related field.

Prior experience in customer service; experience in a fitness or recreation setting.

One (1) year of related work experience.

Current Personal Training certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., NASM, ACE, ACSM, NSCA).

Working Conditions
Employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. Employee may occasionally be required to push, lift, or move gym equipment weighing up to 25-50 lbs. This role involves working in a physically active environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Work Schedule
This is a part-time position with a schedule of up to 29.0 hours per week. The Fitness Center operates Monday through Friday from 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM (CT), and scheduled shifts will fall within these hours. Must be available to work a variable schedule based on operational needs. This position is based on-site at the KCKCC Main Campus.
