Overview

The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely and congenially operating the school bus on a regular daily schedule.

Route drivers for MCA typically work from 6am-8am and 3pm-5pm with many opportunities to drive field trips during the school day throughout the year. Our routes do not go from house to house; our routes go to and from centralized parking locations in either Pilot Mountain, Pinnacle, King, or Rural Hall depending on your assigned route.

The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. The Driver picks up and drops off students as per the schedule, maintains order and security on the bus, and obeys all laws and regulations. The Driver cares for and addresses the students, as well as their parents, in a manner consistent with the philosophy of Millennium Charter Academy. The School Bus Driver reports any concerns to the headmaster or his delegate. Furthermore, this individual understands and supports the classical tradition as expressed by the philosophy, mission, vision, and goals upon which the Academy is founded and is committed to the pursuit of knowable, objective truth, goodness, and beauty.

Qualifications

Is at least 21 years of age.

Maintains a valid North Carolina class B or better commercial drivers license with a P endorsement and an S endorsement with a valid pocket card.

Exhibits exemplary ethics and high moral character.

Has proficient knowledge in highway and school bus regulation, how to deal with children, how to deal with children with special needs, scheduling, record keeping, and equipment cleaning standards and procedures.

Demonstrates skills: ability to operate a school bus safely and responsibly; service to others; public interaction; team building; analytical and problem‑solving; decision making; effective verbal and listening communication; stress management; time management.

Exhibits exemplary ethics and high moral character.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operates the bus in a safe and effective manner to minimize risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life.

Performs daily safety and maintenance checks, ensuring the bus is in good operating condition.

Develops good relationships with students and staff.

Cleans the interior of the bus daily.

Ensures the bus is safely and securely stored.

Advises the Transportation Director of any maintenance or repair requirements.

Maintains schedules.

Ensures riders are aware of the school’s expectations, habits, and special bus protocols.

Maintains order and discipline on the bus.

Reports serious or repetitive behavioral issues to the headmaster or his delegate.

Submits to criminal records checks as required by the school.

Performs other related duties.

Job Requirements

Maintains a valid North Carolina class B or better commercial driver’s license with a P endorsement (passenger) and an S endorsement (school bus) with a valid pocket card.

At least 1 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.

High School/Trade School degree preferred.

Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
