GENERAL PURPOSE
Responsible for supervising the activities of part‑time custodians and personally maintaining, repairing, and/or operating the school building, equipment, and grounds.
The head custodian is responsible for supervising the custodial department within the location.
This supervision is done under the direction of the District Custodial Supervisor.
Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities
Remove snow and ice from sidewalks around buildings and other school property, using snow blowers and snow shovels.
Coordinate building activities with principal, staff members, PTA, etc.
Perform minor repairs on building and facilities (windows, doors, switches, light ballasts, desks, tables, appliances, sinks, toilets, walls, etc.).
Assist food service workers during lunch and breakfast supervising children; sweeping and mopping floors; opening and closing partitions; monitoring tray return; lifting and stacking items in excess of 40 pounds; setting and taking down cafeteria tables; and removing trash cans and emptying into the dumpster.
Operate and perform minor preventive maintenance on equipment (snow blowers, lawn mowers, kitchen disposals, boilers, pumps, fans, etc.).
Report needs for major equipment repairs.
Provide maintenance and upkeep of grounds (lawn mowing, watering, pulling weeds, trimming shrubs and trees, repairing sprinkling systems, keeping gutters and drains clean, etc.).
Responsible for the cleaning of the building (sweeping, mopping, buffing halls and classrooms; cleaning restrooms and auditorium; washing windows and walls; dumping trash, etc.).
Conduct checks on automated heating and cooling equipment.
Order, maintain and dispense cleaning and other maintenance supplies.
Recommend and order replacement equipment and supplies.
Set up and take down chairs and other equipment required for events in the lunchroom and other areas of the building.
Provide recommendations for preparation of school budget and manage custodial budget for supplies and part‑time help.
Supervise part‑time custodians.
Provide safety awareness training to school staff annually.
Inspect building, restrooms, and grounds; determine assignments for part‑time custodians related to their responsibilities.
Open and secure building; ensure building is locked each evening (Part‑time custodians may assist with this).
Lift heavy items for food service workers and other staff members.
Perform maintenance during summer both outside and inside the building (roof, vents, heaters, fans, motors, auditorium, classrooms, etc.).
Receive shipments of books, desks, chairs, custodial supplies, playground supplies, etc.
Unload, count, check invoices and sign for supplies.
Shampoo carpets as needed.
Wax, seal and refinish various floors in the building.
Perform periodic major cleaning projects (painting, trimming, etc.).
Maintain list of current maintenance items and requirements for building and grounds.
Coordinate maintenance with principal.
Interview applicants for part‑time custodial positions and make recommendations to administration.
Check the heating system and facilities on holidays and weekends when necessary.
Complete paperwork, including reports, work orders, emergency reports, safety classes, inventory, ordering, and budgets (staff and supply budgets).
On call for alarms and off‑hour building emergencies.
Maintain forms for drills and inspections.
Accompany the Fire Marshall, Health Department and Risk Management Department on inspections and evaluations and manage follow up where needed.
Serve as a member of the School's Safety Committee.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
A High School Diploma or equivalent.
Three (3) years of related experience.
CPR/First Aid Certification.
Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances.
Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components.
Knowledge and ability to supervise the work of subordinate staff.
Knowledge of cleaning, maintenance, and general repair work (plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry, etc.).
Skill in dealing with all customers (students, faculty, parents, etc.).
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
The job regularly requires above average strength and/or stamina. Job duties may involve lifting and carrying heavy materials/objects (50‑100 pounds).
Occasionally work is carried out in disagreeable conditions. Exposure to adverse working conditions, inclement weather, dirt/dust, noise or fumes, and/or exposure to possible accidents, health hazards or minor injuries produces an environment that involves adjusting to or accommodating these uncomfortable conditions.
