Responsibilities

Conduct avian surveys for song birds, hawks, owls, and eagles.

Conduct small mammal surveys.

Perform field work in remote locations.

Operate field gear and vehicles (loading/towing a trailer with UTV or snowmobile, operating a UTV or snowmobile, traveling on field roads, field navigation, and observing/recording avian activity; previous experience preferred).

Work in a range of extreme temperatures and varying wind speeds.

Be comfortable with environmental hazards (sharp vegetation, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, dust, extreme heat and cold); perform bird identification and use compass, GPS, and maps.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred.

Experience identifying birds, recording data accurately, following study and safety protocols, staying on schedule, and solving field problems.

Previous experience conducting avian surveys is required.

Ability to interact positively and professionally with project staff, landowners, and other technicians.

Must be punctual for early surveys, maintain focus, follow instructions, maintain a positive attitude, and accept guidance and constructive criticism.

Strong communication with the team is essential.

Willingness and ability to travel; environmental conditions include rain, wind, mud, and extreme temperatures.

Proficiency using topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment.

Physical Requirements

Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys may occur in extreme conditions.

After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle for the company. A valid driver’s license is required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
