Position Overview
The Field Safety Professional will report directly to the Safety Director and Safety Manager and serve as an on‑site safety resource. This is not a desk role, it is a boots‑on‑the‑ground position, actively working in the field to ensure employees have the tools, knowledge, and guidance needed to work safely and efficiently. This individual will play a critical role in auditing job sites, training employees, supporting drug testing, documenting safety activities, and reinforcing C.J. Hughes’ safety‑first culture.
Key Responsibilities
Jobsite Audits & Compliance
Perform regular on‑site inspections and safety audits across active projects.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company‑specific safety requirements.
Identify hazards and unsafe behaviors, coach employees in real time on proper corrective actions.
Verify use and condition of PPE, tools, and equipment.
Employee Coaching & Training
Lead toolbox talks and assists supervisors with weekly safety meetings.
Provide hands‑on instruction in
safe trenching, confined space entry, utility installation, and safe work practices.
Reinforce safety awareness by mentoring crews and modeling best practices.
Incident Response & Reporting
Support investigations of incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts/conditions.
Assist in preparing reports, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective measures.
Maintain accurate records of inspections, training, and corrective actions.
Drug & Alcohol Program Support
Assist with conducting and documenting
pre‑employment, random, and post‑incident drug/alcohol testing.
Maintain confidentiality and compliance with company policy and federal requirements.
Collaboration & Support
Act as a
liaison between field crews and the Safety Director/Manager.
Help roll out new safety programs, policies, and initiatives to crews.
Travel regularly to job sites across multiple states as needed.
Qualifications
2–5 years of experience in construction safety, preferably in
underground utility, water/sewer, or natural gas distribution and/or Transmission Projects.
Knowledge of OSHA standards
Familiarity with DOT requirements and pipeline safety standards.
OSHA 510 required; OSHA 500 preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and
teach safety practices at all levels of the company.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for documentation and reporting.
Must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and the ability to travel frequently.
OQ Evaluator Status preferred NCCER / Veriforce / EWN / ITS
Requirements
Satisfactory Pre‑employment drug screening
Valid Driver License
Provide US work authorization documents for I‑9 form
Satisfactory Criminal History Check
Reliable transportation and ability to commute to job sites as needed.
Ability to work on‑site and in an office environment as required.
Experience using Microsoft Office and other Software
