Job Description
Muscatine Schools is hiring a Special Education Aide for Grant Elementary School. Special Education Aides are assigned to work 9 months/year while school is in session. This aide will be assigned to support a specific student within the Special Education program. This position is scheduled for 6.25 hrs/day, Monday through Friday, with an approximate schedule of 7:45am – 2:30pm (subject to change based on student(s)/building needs). Starting pay for this position is $17.93 per hour. Bilingual preferred or highly desirable. All essential functions must be performed on-site.

Responsibilities and duties:

Assist the classroom teacher in helping students increase their academic and behavioral goals and social skills.

Supervise and assist students individually or in group settings under the direction of professional staff.

Support students with academic, social, and emotional needs.

Work one-to-one with students to complete assigned tasks.

Support data collection systems as directed by the teacher.

Assist students with restroom and personal hygiene as necessary.

Maintain regular attendance to ensure consistency with students.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED.

Bilingual preferred or highly desirable.

Ability to complete required training (Chapter 103, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Iowa Mandatory Reporter). Failure to complete training may result in ineligibility for the position.

Valid driver's license, as the position involves community mobility and may require use of personal vehicle.

Physical capacity to assist physically challenged students, including lifting students as required.

Self‑starter, good interpersonal skills, patience, and willingness to assume responsibility.

Ability to work well with others and maintain confidentiality of all information.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Computer proficiency appropriate to job duties.

Experience working with students with challenges.

Ability to help students become more self‑sufficient.

Physical ability to assist students and work small groups or one‑on‑one.

Proficiency with student equipment (computer, wheelchair, health devices, etc.).

Knowledge of building and school bus safety procedures.

Knowledge of building and school alarm systems.

Genuine respect for children and ability to handle occasional challenges.

Strong organizational and time‑management skills.

Physical Demands:

The employee must be capable of working under stress with large numbers of students, parents, and co‑workers. Standing, walking, squatting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting up to 50 pounds, pulling and pushing items. Must continually use hand strength to grasp items. Vision requirements include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers.

Working Environment:

The work environment is generally quiet and may involve indoor and outdoor activities. The position may require working beyond typical 8:00‑a.m. to 4:00‑p.m. hours. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
