Primary Purpose:
Ensure building and grounds are cleaned by using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification: High School Diploma; GED or 3-4 years of experience required.
Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures; aptitude for successful completion of tasks; demonstrated ability to coordinate personnel; broad knowledge of school housekeeping; ability to perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs; ability to operate cleaning equipment; ability to speak and understand English and Spanish (preferred).
Experience: Six months custodial services experience.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Work cooperatively with principals and supervisors to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations.
Daily coordinate and plan with the Custodian Night Lead to determine building needs.
Daily clean offices, computer labs, library, health clinic; keep building perimeter free of debris; stock and restore restroom supplies; perform upkeep and minor plumbing and carpentry repairs.
Assist food services staff with daily trash pickup and clean cafeteria and corridors after meals.
Perform first‑level minor maintenance repairs, including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.
Inspect buildings for graffiti, broken windows, damaged doors, etc.; report, repair, and/or clean as appropriate.
Inspect interior and gym for damaged hardware, partitions, tiles, etc.; report, repair, and/or clean as appropriate.
Conduct weekly roof checks, remove debris, assess leaks.
Service HVAC system: check disconnects, reset circuit breakers, adjust thermostats, clean air supply and return grill.
Service electrical system: change ballasts, replace bulbs and emergency exit lights, replace receptacle covers, reset breakers, turn off power, replace and repair guards.
Service plumbing system: install valve kits, turn off water to appliances, replace washers, unclog fixtures, light pilot lights on appliances and heaters.
Assist in maintaining supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
Demonstrate professional, ethical, responsible behavior and serve as a role model.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Safety:
Follow safety procedures for lifting, climbing, operating tools according to protocols; correct unsafe conditions; report promptly.
Contribute to accident prevention: observe safety rules, staff training, wear PPE, report injuries immediately, proactive safety improvement.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise and evaluate performance of custodial staff.
Physical Demands:
Tools used: carpentry, plumbing, electrical hand tools; frequent standing, sitting, kneeling, lifting up to 55 pounds; operate in various environments; maintain emotional control under stress.
