Job Description
Jefferson County Schools is now accepting applications for Principal and Assistant Principal positions for the 2026-2027 school year. The principal position at Maury Middle School and an assistant principal position at Jefferson County High School are two known openings. There may be additional openings. Please include a letter of interest (maximum one page), resume, and copies of your evaluations from the past three years.

Required to have an administrator's license or be eligible for an administrator's license issued by the Tennessee Department of Education.

Click on the link below to access the Certified Pay Scale for 2026-2027. The salary on the pay scale is based on a 200-day contract. Principal positions are 260 days and Assistant Principal positions are 220 days. Divide the annual salary by 200 to get the daily rate, and then multiply the daily rate times the number of paid days. There is an additional administrative supplement.

Qualifications

Valid Tennessee Teacher’s License

Master’s Degree

Administrative or supervisory experience, with endorsements in accordance with state law and State Board Minimum Rules & Regulations

Effective budget experience

Record of successful educational initiatives

Valid Tennessee teacher’s license with appropriate endorsement (for Assistant Principal)

Valid Tennessee administrator's license or eligibility for one (for Assistant Principal)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Principal

Supervises the operation and management of personnel and facilities at the assigned school site.

Assumes administrative responsibility and instructional leadership for the planning, management, operation and evaluation of the educational program.

Approves the master schedule and determines teaching assignments within the building.

Submits recommendations to the Director of Schools regarding the appointment, assignment, transfer, promotion, and dismissal of all personnel.

Keeps the Director and Central Office Supervisors continually informed regarding the conditions of the school and its activities.

Executes contractual agreements for school facilities by outside groups.

Assumes responsibility for maintaining good public relations with the community and uses community resources to enrich the learning program.

Evaluates teachers and other personnel as outlined in state law, Minimum Rules and Regulations, and Board Policy.

Assumes responsibility for the implementation of state and local curriculum for grades and subjects within his/her responsibility.

Oversees the health and safety of students.

Maintains supplies and equipment and all other materials necessary to operate the school from vendors or school system resources.

Develops an annual School Activity Fund Budget and submits this budget to the Director of Schools by October 1 of each year.

Assumes responsibility for timely faculty meetings, parent-teacher conferences, school activities and school exhibits.

Maintains an accurate inventory of all equipment, textbooks, and supplies assigned to the school.

Assumes the leadership role in planning and development of annual professional development activities for the teaching staff.

Assumes responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through attendance at workshops, regional meetings, and professional organizations.

Coordinates with teachers to select substitute teachers from the system’s “approved list” of substitutes.

Maintains accurate records of student enrollment and attendance. Reporting to the Director of Schools those students who fail to appear for enrollment.

Makes timely referrals to the system attendance officer of students who are truant or exceed allowable days absence without sufficient reason.

Joins the Director of School and Board Chairperson in determining surplus property.

Administers the Code of Discipline and Behavior within the school.

Administers the school’s athletic program(s) in accordance with the TSSAA or other regulatory associations, if applicable.

Observes all other rules and regulations relative to the operation of the schools as established by law and as contained in the Rules, Regulations, and Minimum Standards of the State Board of Education.

Stays familiar with and ensures implementation of all board policies pertaining to the principal’s area of responsibility.

Other duties as identified by the Director of Schools.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Assistant Principal (Secondary Assignments 9-12)

Serve as the Principal’s designee in his/her absence from the school campus.

Participate in data review and monitor instructional needs based on data analysis to include implementation of the state and local curriculum.

Assist the Principal in the overall administration of the school which could include:

Supervises student events during school day and attends/supervises after-school events.

Responsible for faculty, student, and parent communication.

Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the school and deals with discipline referrals.

Participate in scheduled student support team meetings as the Principal’s designee.

Propose and plan in-service activities, faculty meeting agendas, and team meetings with staff.

Coordinate activities of staff in annual School Improvement Planning.

Supervise certified and classified employees and departments as assigned by the principal, and regularly review and evaluate performance.

Assist in curriculum development and implementation of state standards.

Organize and implement staff development opportunities.

Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conduct inventories, maintain records, and verify receipt of such materials.

Monitor and attend to physical maintenance issues of the building and campus.

Assist in preparation of the school budget and financial operations of the school.

Assist in development of emergency preparedness plans, safety inspections, and drills.

Support state mandated testing and other system directed tests.

Provide leadership for all student activities.

Supervise lunch duty.

Perform record-keeping functions and oversee completion of the Preliminary Report.

Supervise parking lot as assigned and registration of all vehicles.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Schools.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Assistant Principal (K-8)

Serve as the Principal’s designee in his/her absence from the school campus.

Participate in data review and monitor instructional needs based on data analysis to include implementation of the state and local curriculum.

Assist the Principal in the overall administration of the school which could include:

Supervises student events during school day and attends/supervises after-school events.

Responsible for faculty, student, and parent communication.
