Job Summary
Advanced Practice Nurse – Correctional Health (APN–CH) functions as a clinical provider to socially marginalized patients under the jurisdiction of the justice system, working in consultation with and under the direct supervision of the attending physician. The APN–CH serves as a clinical leader responsible for facilitating quality patient care in collaboration with pavilion leaders, nursing staff, and other disciplines.
Key responsibilities include:
Evaluating, planning, and providing individualized patient care and programmatic initiatives.
Performing intake health assessments, acute care visits, chronic care visits, and life‑saving interventions for justice‑involved individuals of the Harris County Jail.
Serving as a clinical expert and consultant to support the health system in delivering patient‑centered, culturally competent, outcome‑focused therapeutic care.
Aligning practice with professional rules, accreditation standards, and organizational policies, ensuring regulatory compliance.
Promoting the Harris Health System care values of compassion, trust, integrity, mutual respect, and communication.
Education & Licensure
Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited university–based program for Advanced Practice Nurses.
Current recognition as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with the Texas Board of Nursing.
Current specialty certification from a nationally recognized certifying organization.
Current prescriptive authorization (or eligibility) from the Texas Board of Nursing and ANCC Certification.
Additional certificates as required by the unit/service, including Correctional Health BC (certification).
Experience & Skills
One (1) year of APN experience, preferably in a primary care or urgent care setting.
Three (3) years of RN experience in a related clinical area of practice.
Spanish language proficiency preferred.
Advanced verbal communication skills, including public speaking and patient interaction.
Strong written communication, including correspondence and reporting.
Proficiency in MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Word, and personal computer use.
