Position Summary/Function
Provide intermediate-skilled direct care and oversight to individuals served in the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and any associated units. Duties include but are not limited to monitoring individual behaviors and interactions with others, daily living activities, facilitating educational groups, teaching coping skills, encouraging adherence to treatment, safety observations and other duties as assigned. This position is an “awake” position; no sleeping is permitted while on duty.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities / Functions / Tasks
Provide direct care and oversight to individuals served in the CSU and any associated units.
Monitor behaviors and interactions, daily living activities and safety observations.
Prepare snacks and/or meals as required.
Visually observe individuals, ensuring safety of those served and staff; perform 1:1 observation as needed.
Perform unit rounds and assess safety.
Note significant changes in behavior, watch for cues of increased anxiety or agitation and report to the clinical team.
Assist staff with disturbed or violent individuals, request backup when needed.
Assist in education of individuals regarding behavioral/emotional techniques and support.
Assist in transfer and discharge: helping dress, collect personal possessions, carry out discharge procedures.
Use behavioral and crisis intervention techniques to prevent injury and ensure safety; respond calmly to crisis situations.
Serve as a positive role model, establish therapeutic relationships and appropriate boundaries with individuals and families.
Facilitate educational groups when appropriate—plan, organize, and lead skills-based groups (social skills, coping skills, self-esteem, relaxation, etc.).
Document group activities according to SpectraCare Personnel Policies and Procedures, including regulatory entities.
Order, store, and maintain food quantity for snack; maintain pantry stock and discard expired food.
Maintain unit cleanliness: follow health and sanitation standards, assist with bed linens, keep treatment areas clean.
Maintain records: privacy and confidentiality (HIPAA, 42 CFR); complete documentation accurately and timely; update progress notes and goals; keep information current.
Operate and transport system vehicles, including wheelchair/handicap vehicles; safely load/unload, secure occupants, conduct maintenance checks, and follow cell phone policy while driving.
Help individuals with basic living skills/functions: assist hygiene, teach grooming, clean when soiled, replace linens.
Perform other duties: treat individuals with respect, ensure documentation, respond to inquiries, meet with supervisor, participate in training, adhere to dress code, work with minimal supervision, collaborate with staff, maintain ethics, manage work stress, apply seclusion/holds/ restraints per policy, document crises, participate in shift reporting, work wherever required, travel, and perform any additional necessary tasks.
Maintain regular attendance with timely arrival and departure; work full time with rotating assignments, including overtime, nights, weekends; stay awake during duty hours.

Essential Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge of mental illness, substance use, developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder.
Knowledge and understanding of crisis intervention techniques.
Patience and emotional stability.
Professional response in crisis situations.
Ability to perform a wide variety of job tasks.
Business English, spelling and arithmetic proficiency.
Office practice and procedure knowledge.
Operation of office machines (computer, fax, copy).
Reading instruction manuals in English.
Understanding and following moderately complex oral and written instructions.
Perform tasks safely without endangering anyone.
Follow through with detailed assignments with minimal supervision.
Follow orders, directives, and work with supervisor and other staff.
Adhere to SpectraCare policy, HIPAA laws, 42 CFR regarding confidentiality.
Adhere to health and safety standards.
Remain awake during shift.
Basic knowledge of individuals’ rights.
Effective communication with seriously mentally ill / substance use individuals and staff, both written and oral.
Adapt to varying conditions.
Relay coping skills, positive attitude, and self-esteem.
Facilitate educational groups for individuals in the unit.
Function and perform well in stressful environments and manage work‑related stress to ensure safety.
Travel as necessary.
Maintain professional boundaries with patients and others.
Assist in establishing support systems and interface with agencies and groups.
Establish effective working relationships with staff and leadership.
Demonstrate initiative.
Training Requirements
Complete initial new‑hire training.
Complete OJT training by department.
Obtain proper certifications needed to perform duties.
Complete annual training as required by Alabama Administrative Code, CMS, and all other applicable entities.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
Occasional need to maintain back extension on stomach with body weight on hips and legs for several minutes.
Ability to place body weight on one knee and one elbow on same side; kneel and reach same side toward floor.
Strong grasp needed to open doors, maintain contact during restrain procedures.
Ability to ambulate quickly to assist with restraints.
Travel to system facilities and outlying locations as needed.
Work primarily in temperature‑controlled setting; minimal desk sitting; practice ergonomic movements.
Lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds infrequently.
Talk and hear staff, individuals, and others.
Stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, lunge, squat, reach frequently.
Perform mopping, sweeping, making beds, washing/drying clothes for individuals when required.
Exposure to odors, chemicals (disinfectants, cleansers, soaps), latex, plastic, noise, distractions, unpleasant sights, unpredictable behaviors, body fluids, contagious diseases, wet floors.

Required Qualifications / Education / Experience
High School Diploma or GED required.
Valid driver’s license and good MVR.
Meet insurability requirements to drive a system vehicle (21 years of age).

At least one year of clinical experience in the provision of direct client care.
At least one year of clinical experience in the provision of client care in a mental health setting.
