Accounting Specialist – Payroll & Benefits
Position Summary
The Accounting Specialist – Payroll & Benefits is responsible for processing payroll, administering employee benefits, and supporting related accounting functions. This position works closely with Finance and HR to support employees and maintain accurate financial records.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing
Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time
Maintain payroll records including wages, deductions, taxes, and direct deposits
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
Allocate payroll costs across programs and funding sources
Prepare payroll reports and tax filings
Administration Benefits
Administer employee benefits programs (health, dental, vision, retirement, PTO)
Coordinate benefits enrollment, changes, and open enrollment
Serve as liaison with benefits providers
Reconcile benefits invoices and payroll deductions
Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll and benefits
Accounting & Administrative Support
Reconcile payroll and benefits accounts with the general ledger
Assist with month-end closing and financial reporting
Maintain accurate records for audits and compliance
Support HR and Finance with employee-related financial data
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Associate’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
Any combination equivalent to two years of college-level training with specialized coursework in accounting, bookkeeping, or related field
2 years of relevant payroll and/or accounting experience may be substituted for formal education
Experience with benefits administration preferred
Proficiency in Excel and payroll/accounting system
Abilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in financial records
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
