Schedule:

All vacancies are part‑time (34 hours), first shift, office/on‑site. Shift options are:
Tues/Wee/Fr (7:45 AM–3:30 PM), Thu (9:15 AM–5:00 PM), Sat (7:45 AM–12:45 PM)
Tues/Wee/Fr (9:00 AM–4:45 PM), Thu (10:30 AM–6:15 PM), Sat (7:45 AM–12:45 PM)
Locations:

Bridgeport, Cheshire, Danbury, Enfield, Hamden, New Britain, Norwalk, Norwich, Old Saybrook, Waterbury, Wethersfield, Windham (Willimantic). Additional satellite locations may apply.

The Role

The Motor Vehicle Examiner works in Branch Operations in a fast‑paced environment with high volume customer contact and money handling. Responsibilities include:
Assist with intake of customers and perform a wide range of motor‑vehicle transactions.
Review and examine applications, forms, and supporting documentation for operator licenses, vehicle registrations, and titles.
Verify data such as insurance coverage, vehicle information, tax liability, and suspension records.
Determine proof of ownership and existing encumbrances from submitted information.
Communicate with municipal revenue collectors for clearance.
Prepare and send form letters advising reasons for rejection or requests for additional information.
Compare data with reference manuals and manufacturer publications for verification.
Handle erasures or omissions in typing.
Respond to public and coworker inquiries, providing correct information on requirements and procedures.
Issue motor‑vehicle operator licenses with applicant photographs.
Collect fees, operate cash register, and balance cash and documents.
Operate camera and perform photo processing for licenses.
Perform minor equipment maintenance and routine upkeep.
Schedule appointments and prepare financial documents and reports.
Process registration renewals and disposition requests submitted by garage owners.
Potentially perform full‑scale registration activities on a limited basis.
Maintain records of approved and rejected applications.
Conduct specific research assignments such as chain of ownership or lien information.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of office systems and procedures.
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency with money handling and basic arithmetic.
Ability to read, comprehend, and apply laws, policies and procedures.
Capability to maintain accurate records and examine documents for completeness.
Proficient with personal computer, computer terminals, and office equipment.
Skill in operating office suite software and using reference manuals.
Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of clerical experience.
One (1) year of that experience must include majority face‑to‑face public contact or telephone customer service providing information or resolving problems.
College training may substitute up to two (2) years of experience (15 semester hours = 0.5 year).
Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a production environment with face‑to‑face customer service.
Experience communicating with customers and resolving escalations.
Experience reviewing legal documents, entering data, and handling confidential information.
Experience processing cash, checks, credit‑card transactions, and balancing a register.
Experience independently applying policies and procedures to make decisions.
Experience operating computers, using software applications and standard office equipment such as printers, scanners, fax machines.
Ability to manage assignments with competing priorities.
Experience coordinating workflows and conducting data checks to identify and correct errors.
Character Requirements

A thorough background investigation will be conducted; references and factual statements will be verified.
