Job Summary:
The Trauma, Stroke, and Chest Pain Coordinator/Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of the hospital's trauma, stroke, and chest pain programs.
This role ensures regulatory compliance, accreditation readiness, performance improvement, and education in alignment with national standards, including the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and DNV Healthcare, as well as Utah state requirements for trauma and stroke systems.
The coordinator serves as a clinical expert, program leader, and interdisciplinary liaison, responsible for improving patient outcomes across the continuum of care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Trauma Program Coordination
1. Program Oversight & Leadership
Leads daily operations of trauma, stroke, and chest pain programs
Coordinates interdisciplinary collaboration across ED, inpatient, EMS, and ancillary services
Serves as liaison between medical directors, providers, nursing, EMS, and leadership
Oversees program committees and ensures accountability for outcomes
Performance Improvement & Quality
Designs and leads performance improvement (PI) initiatives
Conducts case reviews:
Trauma activations
Stroke alerts
STEMI and positive troponin cases
PECC
Identifies trends, fallouts, and system gaps
Tracks key metrics
Reports outcomes to committees and leadership
Chest Pain Program Coordination
Coordinates and monitors the hospital's Chest Pain Program in alignment with American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) standards.
Oversees care pathways for acute coronary syndrome (ACS), including STEMI and NSTEMI management.
Monitors key indicators such as door-to-EKG, door-to-balloon, and transfer times.
Collaborates with emergency physicians, cardiologists, EMS, and regional facilities to ensure timely and seamless cardiac care.
Collects and analyzes data to drive process improvement and maintain accreditation (if applicable).
Stroke Program Coordination
Coordinates the hospital's Stroke Program according to American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) and state standards.
Ensures adherence to stroke protocols, including rapid triage, CT initiation, and thrombolytic administration.
Collects and reviews stroke metrics, ensuring timely data submission and quality reporting.
Collaborates with neurologists, tele-stroke partners, and EMS providers to optimize stroke care.
Leads staff education on stroke recognition, treatment guidelines, and documentation requirements.
Trauma Program Coordination
The Trauma Coordinator ensures compliance with the Utah Trauma System and supports the hospital's designation as a trauma receiving facility (Roosevelt ER) and Trauma Readiness (Vernal ER) under the Utah Department of Health.
Regulatory Compliance & Designation
Ensures compliance with Utah trauma designation criteria (Level IV/V or applicable level)
Serves as a clinical and administrative resource for trauma care.
Ensures the facility meets and maintains state trauma designation requirements.
Coordinates trauma performance improvement initiatives, case reviews, and data submission to the trauma registry.
Assists in the development and review of trauma policies, protocols, and staff competencies.
Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director, ED leadership, and regional trauma systems.
Participates in mock trauma drills and debriefs to enhance staff readiness and patient outcomes.
Leads the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) program
Conducts trauma case reviews in collaboration with the Trauma Director and multidisciplinary PI meetings
Identifies preventable complications, delays, and system issues
Develops corrective action plans and tracks loop closure
Trauma Director will conduct the Peer-to-Peer and Medical Review
Trauma Registry & Data Management
Oversees trauma registry data collection, validation, and submission
Ensures accurate abstraction of all trauma cases meeting the inclusion criteria
Supervises Assistant to:
Submits data to the state trauma system as required
Maintains data integrity for benchmarking and reporting
Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator
Serves as the designated Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator in alignment with the Utah Department of Health pediatric readiness requirements

Provides leadership to ensure pediatric readiness within the Emergency Department
Develops, reviews, and updates pediatric-specific policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines in collaboration with the department manager
Coordinates pediatric performance improvement (PI) activities, including:
Case review of pediatric emergency visits
Identification of care gaps and system issues
Implementation of corrective action plans
Involved Medical Director for Peer to peer or Medical Review.
Ensures availability and readiness of pediatric equipment, supplies, and medication dosing resources (Manager of the Department)
Promotes adherence to evidence-based pediatric care standards and protocols
Supports mock codes, simulations, and pediatric skill validation
Participates in state and regional pediatric readiness initiatives and collaboratives
Acts as liaison between:
Emergency Department/ EMS Agencies
Pediatric specialists and referral centers
Ensures appropriate transfer protocols and stabilization practices are followed
Assists with data collection, reporting, and benchmarking related to pediatric care
Promotes family-centered care and patient/family education
Assist in the development of the reunification process with the department managers.
Clinical Coordination & System Integration
Coordinates trauma, stroke, and chest pain care across the continuum:
EMS ED Transfer or admission
Collaborates with EMS Director on:
Field triage guidelines
Trauma activation criteria
Transfer decision-making
Maintains relationships with regional trauma centers
Education & Outreach
Provides education for:
ED and inpatient staff
EMS providers
Supports injury prevention initiatives within the community (work with Tricounty Health)
Ensures staff competency in Trauma, Chest Pain and Stroke Standards
Accreditation & Regulatory Compliance
Maintains continuous survey readiness for all programs
Leads accreditation preparation and site visits
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant guidelines, regulations, and best practices.

Regulatory Requirements:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (Utah)
Bachelor's degree in Nursing (preferred) but not required.
3-5 years experience in ED, ICU, trauma, cardiac, or neuro care
Experience in quality/performance improvement, program management, or data management.
Familiarity with Trauma, Cardiac, and Stroke accreditation processes and designation.
Skills & Competencies:
BLS, ACLS, PALS Required
CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) preferred
NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) within 6 months of hire
TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) and ENPC (Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course) required or obtained within 6 months of hire
TPMC (Trauma Program Manager Course) and Chest Pain/ Stroke Coordinator training preferred.
Estimated Weekly Hours:
Program coordination: 28 hours per week
ED clinical shifts: 12 hours per week
Total: 40 hours/week
Working Conditions:
Hospital environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases and high-stress clinical situations.
May require evening, weekend, or on-call responsibilities for trauma, stroke, or cardiac emergencies.
