POSITION:
Ecological Reserves Interim Crew Supervisor I (Open to CSE Employees Only)
STATUS:
Part-Time / Non-Benefitted / Hourly / Non-Exempt
COMPENSATION:
$24.00 - $26.00 per hour

RESIDENCY
: Candidate must be a California resident. Chico State Enterprises is not a sponsoring agency for staff and management positions (i.e., H-1B Visas).
DURATION:
This is a temporary position expected to run from May 2026 through July 15, 2026. There is potential for extension based on funding availability. This role is subject to an annual limit of 1,500 hours, including any hours previously worked at CSE prior to hire.
HOURS:
This position is expected to work between 20-40 hours per week (subject to the 1,500-hour annual limit noted above). Occasional overtime may be required. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, though weekend work may be necessary for certain assignments. Scheduling is flexible.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under the supervision of the ecological reserves project manager and executive director, responsibilities include both programmatic and maintenance duties:
Programmatic (50%)
Carry out vegetation management on the reserve and in surrounding community areas with a focus on ecologically sensitive practices using a variety of tools.
Serve as a point of contact for project sponsors, ensuring clear communication regarding contract expectations, safety, and accountability.
Assist in the design of projects on the reserve and contracted sites.
Supervise employees, interns, and volunteers.
Support the development and implementation of crew training.
Ensure crew safety and compliance with applicable regulations.
Supervise the completion of projects through tracking and reporting.
Assist with planning and implementation of pile burns and prescribed burns.
Maintenance (50%)
Ensure proper maintenance of tools used for contract and project work.
Assist with shop inventory, organization, and development of protocols.
Perform fieldwork, including invasive plant eradication, fence repair, and road/trail maintenance using hand and power tools.
Assist with facility maintenance and minor repairs.
Qualifications:
Experience performing duties similar to those described above.
Understanding of natural resource conservation and open space management.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a variety of constituents including volunteers, student staff, interns, visitors, faculty, and staff.
Experience supervising others.
Experience implementing and maintaining safety compliance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental science, or a related field.
Knowledge of native and non-native plant species.
Basic understanding of CEQA.
Familiarity with hand tools such as chainsaws, brush cutters, and small equipment.
Firefighter Type II certification or equivalent.
Wildland Fire Chainsaw Training (S-212).
Additional Requirements:
Ability to perform sedentary and physically demanding work.
Willingness to work in extreme weather conditions.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted.
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate must be in possession of valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance. Participation in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program (driving record) is required. The candidate will be required to update their insurance with Chico State Enterprises Human Resources when necessary.
