ECMO Specialist
Work location: Texas Health Dallas, 8200 Walnut Hill Ln, Dallas, TX 75231. Work schedule: Full Time Nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week with on‑call, weekend and holiday duties.
Department Highlights
This role is an exciting opportunity to help continue to grow the ECMO Team.
All ECMO patients will be managed in the CVICU, a 24‑bed intensive care unit that specializes in advanced cardiac and vascular surgical procedures. The ECMO team evaluates and responds to patients all over the hospital.
We are excited to grow our team. We provide eCPR to all patients at THD and the surrounding community.
Only ECMO Transport Teams for THR System, 1:1 pump ratio.
Board‑certified critical care physicians directly oversee patient care in the ICU throughout the day. Providers are on the unit 24 hours a day.
The staffing acuity is a 3:1 pump ratio.
Requirements
Associate Degree of Nursing or Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required.
BSN preferred.
3 years of critical care experience in an acute care setting required or Registered Respiratory Therapist (MICU, CICU, CCU, TICU, etc.) required.
ECMO experience preferred.
RRT – Registered Respiratory Therapist required upon hire.
RCP – Respiratory Care Practitioner if RRT required upon hire.
BLS – Basic Cardiac Life Support required prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly.
ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within 90 days of hire.
CCRN – Critical Care Registered Nurse upon hire preferred.
CES‑A – Certified ECMO Specialist – Adult – preferred or
E‑AEC – Advanced ECMO Specialist Certification – preferred.
Other ACCS Adult Critical Care Specialist (RRT) upon hire preferred.
Completion of ECMO training within 90 days.
Responsibilities
Facilitate safe and orderly operation of the extracorporeal circuit according to ECMO protocol, including drawing blood samples, administering medication, fluids and blood products, monitoring and intervening for circuit complications.
Maintain anticoagulation therapy; analyze activated clotting time (ACT), blood gas, chemistry panel, HGB/HCT, adjust gas and pump flow, monitor and maintain dynamic pressures and blood flow of the circuit.
Ensure complete documentation of ECMO records.
Provide effective instructions to patients and family members.
Make rapid accurate decisions regarding severe diseases, chronic illness, death and dying, coping with stressful situations.
