Location: Cupertino, California, United States – Operations and Supply Chain
As the Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE), you will be accountable for driving the development of key mechanical manufacturing processes across Apple’s worldwide supply base. In this highly visible, hands‑on role you will act as the expert technical member of the Manufacturing Design Team and maintain direct, frequent communication and collaboration with Apple Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing Design partners, and worldwide suppliers.

Apple MDEs are extraordinary engineers that provide end‑to‑end manufacturing and process solutions for key design features. Key responsibilities include:
Define best‑in‑class processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements.
Develop and document processes, including all parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications.
Work with Global Supply Managers to define and establish supply‑chain requirements using selected equipment and manufacturing suppliers.
Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and product‑production ramp and drive engineering issues to resolution.
Use data to drive process decisions, performing basic data analysis, DOEs, SPC, etc.
Identify, research, develop, and qualify premier equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
Define part tolerance and specifications and demonstrate process capability to Product Designers and Industrial Designers.
Lead process development in one of the following areas:
CNC machining
– Develop all CNC milling and turning processes, scope appropriate equipment, develop CNC fixtures, implement touch probing, lead cycle‑time reduction, judge advances in cutters and coatings, support high‑speed machining and optimization at contract manufacturers worldwide. Own yield improvement actions and process‑change decisions based on SPC data analysis.
Surface finishing
– Develop processes for blasting, tumbling, polishing, wet sanding, lapping, anodizing, and PVD, ensuring quality and yield requirements are met.
Glass processing
– Develop processes for glass scribe/break, grinding, lapping, polishing, chemical strengthening, decoration, and functional coatings (inks, thin‑film deposition, etc.), ensuring quality and yield requirements are met.
Assembly
– Develop all assembly processes, including welding, gluing/adhesives, and mechanical fit‑based processes. Support qualification of equipment at suppliers with detailed documentation of process parameters. Own yield improvement actions and process‑change decisions based on SPC data analysis. Identify automation opportunities and justify projects based on line‑efficiency metrics.
Painting
– Develop paint processes to meet cosmetic and surface durability requirements, scope and specify paint equipment, establish environmental clean‑room requirements, evaluate and select appropriate paints and parameters, ensuring quality and yield requirements are met.
Minimum Qualifications
3+ years of full‑time mechanical manufacturing experience.
25 % domestic and international travel required.
Preferred Qualifications
BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing or industrial engineering.
Hands‑on mechanical ability.
Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills.
Experience with highly cosmetic parts or manufacturing in consumer electronics or consumer plastic / sheet metal products.
Self‑starter who defines engineering tasks, meets project objectives, and learns new processes quickly with minimal guidance.
Base pay range: $128,400 – $193,800, dependent on skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple also offers discretionary employee stock units, a discounted stock purchase plan, and benefits including comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, discounted products, free services, educational reimbursement, and discretionary bonuses or commissions.
