Job Overview
Perform fixed wing mission flights, piloting light fixed wing turboprop and reciprocating aircraft to support agency wild‑fire suppression and other resource management activities. Duties include coordinating mission preparation, administration, compliance and post‑action documentation to ensure preparedness in carrying out fixed wing requirements in adherence to applicable state and federal regulations.
Essential Functions
Airplane Operations – Conduct fixed wing mission flights, operate support equipment, maintain communication, perform air transport, provide reconnaissance and observation, and ensure proper pre‑ and post‑flight procedures.
Pre‑Flight Assessment, Preparation & Planning – Evaluate mission requirements to plan all aspects of operations and ensure aircraft and crews are prepared to carry out wild‑fire suppression and related activities safely.
Mission Preparation and Regulatory/Departmental Compliance – Coordinate mission preparation, administration, compliance activities, maintain proficiency, attend training, and perform administrative tasks such as billing and documentation.
Other Duties as Assigned – Perform a variety of professional maintenance, piloting or program administration duties as assigned by the Air Operations Program Manager.
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
Graduation from an FAA‑approved or military flight school; commercial instrument rating; and three years of progressively responsible mission experience, including high‑risk flying such as fire suppression.
Required Certifications
Current and valid FAA Commercial certificate (Fixed‑wing land or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate) with Instrument Airplane and Single Engine ratings.
Current and valid FAA Class I or II Medical certificate.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of fixed‑wing flight principles and practices; aircraft maintenance and inspection; aircraft test program administration.
Knowledge of advanced fixed‑wing aircraft maintenance and repair methods; DNRC aviation program and resources; aviation procurement specifications and policies; FAA, Agriculture USFS, and state laws and operating procedures.
Special expertise in Kodiak 900 and Cessna T206HD airplanes; specialized mission piloting techniques including low‑altitude flying, infrared mission sensor operations, instrument flying, mountain flying, and landing in adverse conditions.
Ability to make quick and sound decisions regarding mission risk assessment and airworthiness that directly impact human safety; assess rapidly changing technological issues; communicate effectively; and make operational decisions accurately.
Aircraft Qualifications
Must remain qualified to operate the following aircraft: Kodiak 900 and Cessna T206HD.
Special Information
Must be eligible to work in the United States and hold a valid driver’s license with fewer than 12 conviction points in the last 36 months.
Eligibility to Work
Must provide, within three days of hire, documentation that shows authorization to work in the United States.
Salary and Benefits
Salary: $40.64 per hour – Telework not eligible.
