Ocean Career: MDMR Natural Resources Specialist
Located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) manages all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide optimum commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses consistent with environmental concerns and social changes. Our mission is to enhance, protect and conserve the state’s marine interests.

This entry‑level professional position involves reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating coastal wetlands permit applications submitted to the Office of Coastal Resource Management at MDMR. The incumbent makes recommendations regarding permit approvals in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and agency policies. Responsibilities include conducting inspections related to permit compliance, addressing potential violations, and performing field visits to assess proposed permit activities. Travel to conduct site inspections within the three coastal counties of Mississippi is required.

What you’ll need to be successful

Working knowledge of coastal and estuarine ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico, coastal resource management techniques, and the fauna and flora of the Gulf.

Knowledge of wetlands delineation (desired).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with a wide variety of people.

Ability to execute multiple projects simultaneously, and strong negotiation, computer, and presentation skills.

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion.
