Position Summary
The Midlothian Public Library's Volunteer Program is intended to expand and enhance public service to the community. Volunteers aid the Library in making the best use of its fiscal resources and contribute to excellent working relationships with community groups and organizations. Volunteer opportunities offer residents an opportunity to contribute to the community, fulfill personal goals, and learn more about the Library. Volunteers generally work on special projects, events or programs.
Volunteers will not be used to replace the work done by paid Library staff. A volunteer is identified as a person who offers to perform a task or service freely for the Library without compensation or benefits. Volunteer shifts will usually be a minimum of two hour intervals.
Essential Job Functions
Minimum Volunteer Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must complete and pass a criminal background check with no conviction of a felony, any crime of a sexual nature or against children, any crime related to assault or violence, any crime related to dishonesty, or any crime that would be inconsistent with volunteer service with the City.
Shifts & Responsibilities:
Volunteer shifts will focus on general library support such as shelving/shelf-reading (general volunteering), general event support, and other special projects. All shifts are available on a first come, first served basis.
General volunteering shifts may include:
Assisting library staff with pulling and processing patron holds.
Assisting library staff with check-ins from the drop box(es).
Re-shelving library materials.
Shelf-reading library shelves to ensure items are correctly organized.
Collection project support as determined by library staff.
Event support shifts may include:
Assisting library staff with the set-up and break-down for events as applicable.
Assisting library staff in handing out supplies for events as applicable.
Help to provide patrons with directions regarding events.
Any other support as designed by the event manager.
Special project shifts may include a variety of support services. These may include programs volunteers are interested in providing, such as community storytimes, game nights, and other activities, as well as operational support tasks like inventory projects and section reclassifications
