We are hiring a full‑time LEARNS Program Assistant in the Community Services Department. This position supports the Program Coordinator in the daily operations and programming of the LEARNS before and after school care and summer camp programs. This position assists with program planning, staff support, participant supervision, and site operations to ensure a safe, engaging, and positive environment for children and families. The Program Assistant also provides direct on‑site supervision of part‑time staff to ensure daily activities and planned programming are carried out effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Provides attentive supervision and care for children in the before and after school and summer camp programs, promoting a safe, inclusive, and positive environment.
Assists in developing, organizing, and leading age‑appropriate structured recreational, educational, and enrichment activities, including games, crafts, and other programs.
Supports operations at multiple before and after school program sites including Westbrook Community Center, Canal School, and Saccarappa School.
Assists with the day‑to‑day supervision and support of part‑time program staff to ensure activities and schedules are implemented effectively.
Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.
Education and Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth programming, childcare, recreation programs, or related activities required.
First Aid and CPR certifications required.
Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement required, or the ability to obtain licensure and endorsement within one (1) year of employment.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the primary duties and responsibilities may be considered.
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive salary range of $20.07–$29.47 per hour.
This position is covered by the General Unit collective bargaining agreement. The next agreement is under negotiation for a July 1, 2026 effective date.
A comprehensive benefits package includes medical (PPO plan at 12% premium cost, plus HRA reimbursement), dental, vision, life insurance (one times base salary), short and long‑term disability, and employee assistance program.
Generous paid leave including vacation, sick, and 13 holiday per year.
Tuition reimbursement for job‑related courses.
Retirement program of the Maine Public Employees Retirement Plan (Maine PERS) or defined 457 with matching up to 6%.
