Are you a skilled electrician who takes pride in keeping systems running safely and efficiently? The Indianapolis Zoo is seeking an Electrician to support the reliability of our facilities and infrastructure across our 64-acre campus.

As part of the Facilities team, this role reports directly to the Facilities Manager and plays a key role in maintaining safe, compliant, and functional electrical systems. This position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to respond effectively in both routine and emergency situations.

What You'll Do

Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems including motors, panels, lighting, transformers, generators, alarm systems, and related equipment.

Perform preventive maintenance and inspections to ensure safe and reliable operation of electrical systems.

Support general maintenance needs across facilities, including minor plumbing and mechanical repairs.

Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents.

Assist in maintaining buildings, structures, and infrastructure across Zoo grounds.

Respond to emergency situations and participate in on‑call rotations as needed.

Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles safely, including manual transmission vehicles.

Maintain compliance with safety standards, including PPE usage and applicable OSHA guidelines.

Collaborate with the Facilities team to identify and resolve issues proactively.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in commercial or industrial electrical work.

Working knowledge of NEC (National Electrical Code) and OSHA safety standards.

Experience with a wide range of voltages, including 120V–480V and higher voltage systems.

High school diploma or equivalent; electrical certification or relevant trade/vocational training required.

General maintenance experience (plumbing, mechanical systems) preferred.

Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and 50 lbs. frequently; ability to work at heights and navigate ladders and uneven terrain.

Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to assess and respond to complex situations.

Valid Indiana driver's license (or ability to obtain within 30 days) and insurable by Zoo policy.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, overtime, and on‑call shifts.

Bonus Points

Additional certifications or specialized training in electrical systems.

Experience working in large, multi‑system facilities or similar environments.

Employment at the Indianapolis Zoo is contingent upon the successful completion of pre‑employment testing including a background check, motor vehicle check (if applicable) and a drug test.
